Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Davies
Hi Candice, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m what I would call a serial entrepreneur: my brain is constantly thinking of “great ideas” and ways to help people. In my “past life” I was a clinical therapist, and I had my own private therapy practice for over a decade. I’ve always been interested in understanding people: why they do the things they do, feel what they feel, and how their thoughts and unique way of putting the world together, influences the decisions they make in their life. This has helped me immensely in the work I do now with online business owners, because at the end of the day, if we can’t speak to people in a way that moves them emotionally, or in a way that helps them reframe how they thinking about things, we’re going to struggle to sell our offers.
So much has changed for me in the 4 years that I have immersed myself in the online business space. When I first started off, I was so fresh and green behind the ears, that I fell hook line and sinker for the glitz and glamour that so many of the “success story people” dangle before you. The idea of having a business that I could scale and bring in money while I slept, was intoxicating. But I wisened up quickly when I realised that things don’t quite work the way you think they will – once you actually dive in.
I’m all about transparency, saying it like it is and sharing what I have experienced first hand (and observed from working with all kinds of clients in all kind of niches). I’ve now come back to what I know to be true for me: I love working closely with people, having connected relationships with my clients and working with them (doing whatever it takes) to help them succeed.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely been bumpy but I now know that that’s just the way it is. When I first started my online business, it was with with an idea I thought was great – but no one wanted. I couldn’t understand why I was battling so much, I couldn’t make sales consistently despite how much effort I was putting into it. It was a very hard time for me – both financially but also emotionally. I felt very defeated, disillusioned and desperate.
Thankfully, I have a real entrepreneurial spirit – fuelled by grit and I don’t give up easily. I relentlessly persisted in making things work and figuring out where I was going wrong and what I was missing – which often meant going back to the drawing board, trying new things, testing things out and doing it over and over again.
I made some great decisions and some bad ones. Invested in some great coaches and programs to advance my learning and skills – and wasted money with some pretty crap ones.
But truthfully, this is an unavoidable part of the online business world. You have to get in the mud as I always say. You have to be ok with not knowing all the answers, with things feeling a bit unclear and you have to keep going until things start to get more streamlined and successful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
So many online business owners I have met and worked with over the last few years, are quite simply lost, confused and burnt out.
They have often taken a few signature courses from the big guys or invested in coaches and service providers who have promised the world and then severely under delivered.
Something I have observed is that many of them (like me when I first started) had an idea of what they wanted to do and what would work and then just hit the ground running.
Fast forward a couple years and they still have no traction.
They are not “newbies” to the online space, they have a few clinks in their armour. Slightly battered and bruised from the journey so far, they’re searching for someone to help them pull things together, and connect all the dots of their business in a way that makes sense because it is strategic and intentional.
– They do not want to be one of 500 hundred people in a big launch, whose name is up on a post it note on someone’s “launch wall”.
– They do not want to pay to get into someone’s signature course and then have other coaches leading the sessions.
– They do not think that 15 minutes of 1:1 time with their coach is sufficient, nor do they think that 15 minutes with their coach is something they should feel grateful for because at least they get some time with the person they want to work with.
These are my people.
They don’t believe the BS and bright lights of good marketers, they are wise enough to know that creating a successful online business will take time and that their lack of progress is probably because something is missing in the foundation upon which they are are trying to build from and that they are too close to their own stuff to see it clearly.
They also want to work with someone who is available and is genuinely invested in helping them wade through the mud with them.
YSF helps these kinds of business owners from the ground up with highly individualised and personalised support to connect the most critical elements of their business together.
I only work with 3 clients at any given time because right now I value impactful and effective work over scalability and volume.
Everyone who comes to me (no matter where they are in their online journey) has to begin with phase 1 and it is a non negotiable.
By the end of the first phase of working with me, they have a crystal clear roadmap of the “who”, the “where”, the “what” and the “how”
WHO you are wanting to attract (audience, niche and niche subsets)
WHERE you are going to grow (lead gen strategy; cold traffic, warm traffic and conversion point)
WHAT you are going to sell (you want to put the right offer in front of the right person at the right time).
HOW you are going to do it (sales strategy, messaging and positioning)
Even – and especially – if they think they know this already!
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Yes please:
If you’re reading this and it feels like you are the kind of person I am talking about – please please please read my top pointers…
1. Stop buying into the nonsense that a lot of people are spewing online:
They’re good marketers OR they’re unethical and trying to sell you sh&T!
Nothing, nothing, nothing, happens quickly.
Don’t confuse the speed you experience digitally as an online shopper, browser or viewer with the speed it takes to create and grow a successful digital business.
2. Live in reality -yip I know it’s hard!
We need money to pay for stuff – full stop.
Do not quit your job and go “all in” because someone is telling you to visualise your success so you can manifest it.
You have responsibilities and there are practicalities in your life that simply cannot be funded with passion.
Does this mean it may be harder for you – yes. You may have to work on your online business simultaneously.
But remember no matter what anyone else is telling you – this will not happen quickly in a way that will financially sustain you in the same way that your current income is.
There is a BIG learning curve, that involves bumps. THIS IS UNAVOIDABLE.
So rather know the truth now, factor it in and work towards a bigger picture in small incremental steps.
2. Have your eyes WIDE open and listen with a critical ear:
Ask good questions when you are considering signing up to expensive programs or with coaches.
(I always take screenshots of the sales pages of programs I decide to invest in so I always have evidence of what was “sold” to me and what was promised or implied).
Speak to people who are not affiliates and who have nothing to gain from giving you a review of the program/coach you are thinking of.
3. Go big first!
You will be shocked to tally up how much money you will spend on “low ticket” or more “affordable” programs because you think you need to start small before you can invest in good coaching.
The default is to think you need to work up to that – but you will not believe how much time and money you will waste with this approach.
If you can – invest in good coaching right from the start.
And …. ask good questions (see point 2) so you find the good ones!
In saying so, I will add – do not be reckless with your money and spend what you do not have. While you may find brilliant coaches and programs, never believe that you will be able to implement what they teach you so quickly that you will see results immediately. Do not invest if it puts you or your family at financial risk.
4. Just get in the damn mud!
Lastly – please stop believing that if you just buy one more course or program, you’ll finally know enough to do this.
You will NEVER know it all and the BEST learning comes from doing – from getting in the mud – not from watching more pre-recorded content!
