Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Miller
Hi Brittany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Brittany Miller, CEO of Brittany Miller Biz, a Social Media and Marketing Consulting Agency and Educational Platform. I help personal brands and service providers increase their visibility, impact, and profits through social media.
My journey to entrepreneurship wasn’t a straight path. It all began in my final year of University when I studied abroad in The Netherlands. Living and travelling for six months fueled my passion for exploring different cultures and sparked a desire for freedom in my work life.
After returning to Canada, I promised myself I’d build a business and lifestyle that would allow me to keep traveling. However, I quickly found myself in the 9-to-5 corporate grind, feeling uninspired and stuck. Though I had a great job, I knew I wanted more — more challenges and more fulfillment.
In January 2019, at 29, my partner Bryce and I made a bold move: we quit our jobs to travel the world. For six months, we explored over 10 countries (From New Zealand to Japan and so many incredible countries in between). During that time, I started helping friends and small businesses with their social media. I charged $50 a month, partly because I was doing it for fun AND partly because I didn’t know how to price this as a service.
When we returned to Canada, the thought of going back to corporate life didn’t sit well with me. That’s when the idea hit: What if I turned my passion into a business? In October 2019, I launched Brittany Miller Biz as a boutique social media management agency. Since then, my business has grown and evolved into what it is today: A Social Media and Marketing Consulting Agency and Educational Platform.
Today, I help brands and their teams develop the social media skills to amplify their message and increase ROI. I also offer group programs and online courses to support smaller teams and new entrepreneurs.
My business will celebrate five years in October 2024, which makes me so proud because being an entrepreneur is both tough and rewarding!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
On social media, it’s easy to make a business look like it’s always thriving and successful. But behind the scenes, every entrepreneur faces challenges in one way or another.
It wasn’t until I accepted that it’s very normal for business to have ups and downs that I felt more comfortable sharing my own experiences.
With that in mind, I’ve had my fair share of challenges! Here are three I’ve navigated over the years:
Challenge 1: Navigating Misaligned Clients
When I first started my business, I wanted to help everyone (a common trait for people pleasers!). Even when there were clear red flags that indicated a poor fit, I’d say ‘yes’ to a misaligned client because I genuinely wanted to help them. But what happened was they didn’t value my expertise, would overstep my boundaries, and it always felt like what I was doing was never good enough. It took a lot of time (and too many tears and anxiety) for me to realize I don’t have to help everyone. Now, during Clarity Calls, I treat the process as an interview — not just for the client, but for me as well. I assess whether we’re aligned in values, and only work with clients who energize me and are a full-body YES to work with!
Challenge 2: Pivoting My Business
In my third year of business, I felt completely burnt out and no longer excited about managing social media accounts. I asked myself, “Do I still want to be doing social media management when I’m 40?” The answer was a clear no. That realization freaked me out because I was building a business I didn’t even want.
So, I started thinking about what did excite me, and the answer: educating and empowering others. After a few panic attacks and incredible support from my business coach, I began the process of pivoting my business. I transitioned from offering social media management to focusing on social media consulting and creating educational courses. It was an emotionally draining shift, but today, I’m building a business that aligns with my passion and brings me joy.
Challenge 3: Resilience
Some days, it feels like everything goes wrong at once. That happened to me in the Spring of 2024 (yes, this year). One Friday, I opened an email from the CRA about a tax issue that led to two hours on the phone with no resolution. Then, I checked my inbox and saw that a $2,000 speaking engagement, which I was about to finalize, had been cancelled. Shortly after that, a new 1:1 client canceled their $18,000 contract just weeks before we were set to start. And to top it off, I was supposed to be leaving for a holiday the following Monday.
It was overwhelming, and I was an emotional mess. I decided to take the rest of the day off, let myself feel the emotions, and approach everything with a clear mind the next week.
This experience taught me two key lessons:
Lesson 1: Shift in perspective – Yes, I was losing major contracts, but my health and family were fine, and I knew I could find new clients and opportunities.
Lesson 2: Resilience – Instead of accepting the cancellations at face value, I decided to be curious and supportive. I reached out for clarification, offering to assist them in whatever way they needed. After transparent conversations, both clients decided to move forward with me.
Through it all, I’ve learned that challenges are inevitable in business. A quote I recently heard that deeply resonated with me is: “What’s personal is universal.” Every entrepreneur faces setbacks and moments of doubt. So, if you’re navigating a tough time, remember you’re not alone. Every business owner has faced something similar, and it’s all part of the journey.
