Today we’d like to introduce you to Belal Kamara
Hi Belal, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Belal Kamara. I was born in Kuwait, and my family moved to Memphis, TN, when I was about six years old. Growing up in Memphis, I was constantly surrounded by the idea that building skills is crucial so that when an opportunity arises, you can seize it. Inspired by this mindset, I pursued my education at the University of Memphis.
After graduating, I dedicated myself to learning how to code. My goal was to launch my own startup without needing to rely on a partner when inspiration struck. I wanted the freedom to bring my ideas to life independently.
After moving away from Memphis, I realized that working out wasn’t as enjoyable as it had been when I was exercising with friends. This led me to think that others in new cities might be facing the same issue. I decided to test this theory by running a small ad campaign asking who was looking for a workout partner. By the end of the week, 200 people had signed up. This response confirmed that I wasn’t alone in facing this challenge.
Motivated by this feedback, I started coding the prototype of Let’s Gym, aiming to create the go-to app for finding workout partners with similar fitness goals. After developing the prototype, I received valuable feedback on how to improve it. We went back, implemented those changes, and within a few months, we launched the beta version of Let’s Gym on both iPhone and Android in three cities: Chicago, Denver, and San Francisco.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has certainly had its share of challenges, and it hasn’t always been smooth. One of the initial struggles was learning to code from scratch after graduating from the University of Memphis. It was a steep learning curve, but I was determined to gain the skills necessary to bring my ideas to life independently.
Launching Let’s Gym came with its own set of hurdles. Running the initial ad campaign and seeing 200 people sign up was encouraging, but it also meant I had to quickly scale up my efforts. Developing the prototype was a time-consuming process, and gathering feedback highlighted even more areas for improvement. Implementing those changes while staying true to my vision required careful balancing and perseverance.
Additionally, launching the beta version in three major cities presented logistical and marketing challenges. Ensuring that the app was user-friendly and effectively connected people with compatible workout partners required continuous refinement and user engagement.
Despite these obstacles, each challenge taught me valuable lessons and reinforced my commitment to creating a solution that helps people stay motivated and connected in their fitness journeys. The road may not have been smooth, but every bump along the way has been an important part of the process.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risk-taking is an inherent part of entrepreneurship, and my journey has certainly involved its fair share of risks. I believe that taking calculated risks is essential for growth and innovation. Without stepping out of our comfort zones, we miss out on opportunities to learn, evolve, and achieve our goals.
One of the major risks I took was deciding to learn how to code and build my own startup after graduating from the University of Memphis. This decision required a significant investment of time and effort, with no guarantee of success. However, I knew that acquiring this skill set was crucial for my long-term vision of creating a tech-driven business. The risk paid off, as it allowed me to develop the prototype for Let’s Gym independently.
Another significant risk was moving away from Memphis to a new city. This transition meant leaving behind my established network of friends and support systems. It was challenging to adapt to a new environment while trying to maintain my fitness routine and professional goals. However, this experience inspired the creation of Let’s Gym, highlighting the importance of finding workout partners and building a community, even in unfamiliar settings.
Launching Let’s Gym was also a considerable risk. Running an initial ad campaign to gauge interest could have easily resulted in minimal engagement, but the overwhelming response of 200 sign-ups in the first week validated the need for such a platform. Developing and launching the app in three major cities—Chicago, Denver, and San Francisco—presented logistical and financial risks. We faced uncertainties regarding user adoption and market competition. Nonetheless, we believed in our vision and pushed forward, continuously refining our app based on user feedback.
My perspective on risk is that it should be approached thoughtfully and strategically. It’s important to assess the potential benefits and drawbacks, gather as much information as possible, and be prepared to adapt if things don’t go as planned. While taking risks can be daunting, I view them as necessary steps toward innovation and success. Each risk I’ve taken has taught me valuable lessons and brought me closer to achieving my goals.
Ultimately, I believe that calculated risks are crucial for personal and professional growth. By embracing uncertainty and viewing challenges as opportunities, we can unlock new possibilities and drive meaningful change.
