Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Chang.
Hi Ashley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Sundays about two years ago now. We are an executive assistant service for working parents. We help parents get more focus time back at work and more quality time back at home.
Before this, I worked in the tech industry for a little over a decade. While I was there, I saw many of the smartest people I know struggle after they had kids because there wasn’t support for them balancing family and work. I felt this in my own life with my mom, who was a computer scientist in the 80s and then when she had us, felt like she really had to choose between family and work.
Our goal is to help more parents stay in the workforce, have meaningful careers, and the family lives that they want. Since starting Sundays, I have spoken to over a thousand parents about how we can solve this problem. Today, we have a team of executive assistants who work closely with families to help them delegate the life ops work that it takes to keep their family running so that they can get their time back for what’s most valuable to them. We have about 25 executive assistants on our team today and we recently hit $1M in ARR.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The hardest part of building Sundays for me has been figuring out where to get started. Before even starting Sundays, I was exploring several ideas and figuring out where to put your time and energy as a new entrepreneur can be really difficult. Since deciding to build Sundays, we’ve had really great feedback from the parents we talked to about problems they were facing and then engagement from customers but there is always something hard to learn from.
I think as an entrepreneur, some of the hardest things are keeping yourself motivated because you go through cycles of feeling like you know everything and then you run into another big problem and realize that you actually don’t have it figured out.
My favorite way to deal with this is to reflect on all the problems that I’ve solved before, so that I know I can solve more in the future.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sundays is an executive assistance service for working parents. We help parents get more focused time back at work and more quality time back with their families. We have a team of human executive assistants who are almost all parents and they support the families that we work with in building the lives that they want.
Our service is unique because our team is all based in the US and so they have experience living and growing their own families here and they can use that to support the families that we work with. We are also very relationship-based, so the executive assistants on our team really get to know you, your family, what your goals are, and over time they become more and more valuable.
We also have an offering for businesses as well as families where we support business owners, founders, and fractional leaders. Holistically, our executive assistants will work with them embedded in their work lives but also understanding that family doesn’t stop when they’re at work, and everything ends up on one long to-do list, so we will support them across home and work with one person who has context over everything they have going on.
I’m most proud of getting to build a community around helping working parents live the life that they want. Of course, we get to work with amazing clients, but even more important than that, we get to shine a light on what it means to be a working parent and hopefully make cultural change for supporting more families at work and at home.
Our long-term goal is to help get more moms into leadership roles so that they can redefine how our businesses and society think about what it means to balance family and work.
What’s next?
We’ve been growing really quickly over the last year, and so this year we are really focused on building strong foundations by bringing on the very best executive assistants that we can and building out strong relationships for them with clients. We really just want to impact as many families as we can.
We’re especially excited about continuing to grow our business and family support because we see more and more exciting leaders who are stepping away to start their own businesses, and we think that supporting them holistically is the best way for them to spend their time on what they are most uniquely skilled at.
