Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Lynn
Amy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello! I’m Amy Lynn- a wedding planner based in NYC (the greatest city in the world). My company is called Poppy + Lynn. I work with couples all over the world to plan their wedding day with flair, love, and a touch of whimsy. My clients are, and I mean this with so much love, weirdos. They don’t want cookie cutter, traditional weddings. We infuse so much personality and fun into a Poppy + Lynn wedding.
My background is in both theater and fashion marketing. Which translates to a love of aesthetics and dramatics. I love telling stories and making it look amazing in the process. I moved to New York about 5 years ago and with a lot of patience and hustle, have built this company from the ground up on my own. I’m a one woman show (except on wedding days where my incredible assistants help me bring everything to life), and I am so thankful I get to have my dream job in the dreamiest city.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not!! When I first started, I was living in Savannah, GA. I was a new college grad, I had recently been laid off from my job working at Kate Spade, and I was desperately trying to fit into a mold that I could never make work. I started branding myself with somewhat generic “wedding” language. Classic, timeless, elegant, romance, etc. All of these are fine, but in an oversaturated market with no experience, I didn’t stand a chance. As hard as I tried, I wasn’t getting any business because everything I was doing in my branding and marketing was generic and didn’t stand out. I would try to position myself as a wedding planner with “edge”, but then conflicted that in my online presence and portfolio. Eventually, I moved to New York and took a deep dive into my personal brand identity. I realized my secret sauce and started finding ways to infuse my personality into my business. Of course, this was during a worldwide pandemic so naturally, I wasn’t getting much business then either. But I didn’t give up, and I pushed myself to meet people, tour spaces, and just get out there. In some ways, the pandemic helped my business because I had just started niching down at the same time that there was a huge wedding boom. I was able to jump in at a prime moment in the industry when there was SO much demand and really grow and hone in my craft.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Poppy + Lynn?
Poppy + Lynn is an event planning and design firm based in New York City. I specialize in creative, fun, out of the box events that are not cookie cutter. My clients appreciate uber personal details, unique touches, and standing out from a crowd. I hold true to strong core values, and try to surround myself with like minded vendors that make for the ultimate dream team on event days. My work has been featured in The New York Times, Bustle, BRIDES, The Knot, Junebug Weddings, Green Wedding Shoes, Style Me Pretty, Rock n Roll Bride, and more. When it comes to events, my aim is to find ways to make the occasion feel really authentic and special. As guests walk in, I want them to say “Wow, this feels so Alex and Taylor” (insert your names here!) I welcome clients of all backgrounds and embrace their love for each other and their personalities to the fullest. No two events ever look the same, because no two people are the same.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think my authenticity is something that really sets me apart and has been a driving force for my success. When I tried to fit into the “mold” of wedding vendors that I had seen before, it didn’t work because it wasn’t me. I’m not a “timeless, romantic” event planner. I love pink. I love theater. I love disco balls and feathers and sparkle and my cat and this beautiful city, and I make sure that the things that make me, me are shown in my branding. And I take the things that make my clients who they are and infuse it into their events. I keep it real and I am so passionate about what I do, and I think my clients really appreciate that and know that I will always be their biggest cheerleader and advocate.
I also am very transparent throughout everything I do. I have my values listed on my website very clearly, and I make sure to be honest and open with my clients during every step of the process. I don’t take commissions from vendors, which is a common practice in our industry because I want to make sure that I find my clients the best fit, not the vendor that will give me the biggest kickback. In this industry, it’s easy to get sucked into the glitz and glam of it all, and I always remind couples that I’m a real person too and I understand they have worked hard for their money and I respect it as such. Because of all of this, my clients trust me wholeheartedly and know that I always have their best interests at heart.
