We asked some of the brightest folks from within the community to reflect back on their days in school and to share with us a story of when they learned a particularly important or impactful lesson. We’ve shared highlights below.

When I was in my final year of college, my favorite photography teacher passed away very suddenly. We came into class one day and received the news that he had passed over the weekend. This hit me hard as he really pushed me to become a better photographer and individual. Due to his passing being so sudden, it really opened my eyes to how short and unexpected life can be. Often in the sports industry, we are told “it’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know”. This is something I was told in my first sports management undergrad class, so it became what I believed. I took this class during the pandemic so, in order to learn more about the sports industry, I did two things. I started Palace Sports, and I just started connecting with as many sports professionals as I could on LinkedIn, thoroughly believing that if I could just have these connections, I could further my standing in the sports industry with “who I knew.” Read more>>

As a college student, I have been through various trials and tribulations that have led me to learn the most significant lessons in my life. Being in college has paved the way for me to truly know who I am by understanding my purpose & what I have to offer in this world. One of the major lessons I have learned on my college journey taught me to love myself and put myself first. I was always the go-to person many people would confide in just to let their issues off and to gain more clarity on whatever pain they were going through. It took me some time to become aware that when times became tough for me, I had no one to trust or talk to about my struggles but God fully. I love this question, as I’ve thought about it quite a bit with my child in their first year of art college. It’s been interesting to me, talking with them beyond the usual “get rest, show up for class, LISTEN to your professors” drill. And of course, because they’re an introverted art kid, I’ve stressed the importance of relationships and networking.
