The most important lesson I learned in school was the power of teacher/mentor believing/encouraging you even if you don’t believe in yourself.
I was in middle school when my Principal noticed my drawings. I was shy and unsure, but she saw something in me and kept encouraging me to participate in inter-school art competitions. I still remember standing in the hallway with my sketchbook, nervous before my first contest—she walked by, smiled, and said, “You’ve got this.” That moment stuck with me. Read more>>

One of the most impactful courses I took during my time at school was Artist Practice and Professional Development. It went beyond studio work and taught me essential skills for working as an artist in the real world. Through this course, I learned how to introduce myself and my work professionally, communicate effectively with galleries, and even how to apply for grants to support exhibitions. One of the most important lessons I’ve ever learned is that the majority of your learning will happen outside of the classroom — and just how personal that process in itself can be. That every student may be given the same curriculum stepping into their classroom for the first day, but no one is handed a rubric when you step into the classroom of life.
