I’ve said this often but Joseph Patel, the exceptional producer behind “Summer of Soul” was the person who gave me an opportunity to work on the original content team at Vevo as a producer that truly changed the trajectory of my life. I wouldn’t be directing or ever have worked in the music industry if it were not for him. At that time, I had a lifelong passion for music and storytelling, an intense work ethic but no direction or idea of what kinds of opportunities or careers were possible for someone like myself. I was riddled with imposter syndrome about the transition from writing to video but I remember Joseph explaining that I could be taught the technical aspects of production but I was someone who knew how to tell a story and that was something he couldn’t teach. I have always been an avid reader; I prefer words printed on pages, painting images in my mind over reality. Reading is my favorite way to escape. I am a fantasy lover: world building, supernatural powers, paranormal beings, those are the books that I gravitate to. I thoroughly enjoy being immersed in a world where a happy ending is promised and the characters are familiar but not real.
