When businesses are covered in the media, often there is a lot of focus on the initial idea, the genesis moment. Then they almost brush over the middle part – the scaling up part – and arrive at how big and awesome the business is today. It makes for a fun read or in the case of a movie or show an entertaining watch, but it’s also a missed opportunity. This isn’t necessarily an expression of success as of yet, but I can give insight on the provisions I’m making now to “scale up”. She Got Game League is not a profitable organization as of date so the first thing I had to do was scale back on staff’s pay. My wife and I amongst a couple other members of our family volunteer to cut costs. The league currently has 6 cities and I just came on board as the commissioner for Nashville Spring 2024. We need to grow the fan base and increase our number of participants so young ladies looking to further their basketball career have a competitive, legitimate platform to showcase their talents. At the beginning of September, Dan the Baker turned 4 years old so I’ve been reflecting on my growth over the past four years. One thing that I think I’ve realized is that growth is about both setting your goals for the future as well as staying grounded in the present. Yes, it is important to set goals for yourself, wether is monetary goals or staffing goals or how much free time you wanna have, but at the same time you need to continue to be mindful of where you are now, and I think the most realistic example of that for me is figuring out where my skillset was and where I needed to improve.
