The number one thing we hear from entrepreneurs and artists and creatives when we ask them about their education is about how irrelevant it was to their story. Sure, some folks had wonderful educational experiences, but for many their experiences left them feeling ill prepared for life and their careers. So, we wanted to create a space for folks to share their experiences and ideas for how we can improve our educational system.

I think we need to reemphasize critical thinking. The ability to reason seems sorely lacking these days. I see a culture on the verge of collapse due to polarization. The focus on extremes – Right and Left – has been stoked and enflamed by the media for its own benefit. Unfortunately, many individuals in our society are unable to see this and are sucked into the narrative, feeding it even further. We need the ability to think for ourselves and communicate with others who may not see the world entirely the way we do. We need thinker skins and better debating skills. All of this comes from the ability to reason. Read more>>

Hello, thanks for having me! So, this might be an unpopular opinion but I think everyone should take a basic business class, no matter what field you are entering. I remember scoffing at the idea of a business course when I was in college, but that knowledge would have saved me a lot of headaches in the long run. Accounting, finance, project management…these skills can be applied in our daily lives too, not just our careers. Read more>>

Instead of only introducing classical music as the only way to learn, I focus on the overall understanding of music (improvising, reading, entertaining, studio work, etc). There’s more to learning an instrument than Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. I truly believe it’s the reason why most people quit the “classical instruments” (pun intended. Those instruments are not meant only for classical music). Music is not meant to be taught like math. I created The Performing Arts Institute to expand the mind and enhance someone’s natural ability and creativity Read more>>

This is a great question! I have often thought the educational system here in the United States is flawed. The school system will teach children music and art but doesn’t make financial education a part of the core curriculum? That is the biggest disservice the school system does to the youth. Yes some people may become musicians or artists but everyone needs to know how to manage the money they do make. It’s one thing to have money it’s another thing to know how to utilize it so it lasts you a lifetime, as well as creating generational wealth for your children. Read more>>

As a recent university graduate and entrepreneur in the education space, I see both the progression and stagnation in our education system. In Arizona, where we average 48th out of 50 states in education quality, the inequities can be so obvious that you only need to cross the street to see them. Read more>>

I think our society needs to re-shift their focus away from academic and athletic successes within our educational system, and start to prioritize “life skills readiness.” Gone are the days where you can sign up for woodshop, auto shop, or home-economics. Instead, modern day families are over scheduled and overstressed, trying to accommodate SAT study classes, competitive travel sports, and extracurricular activities, all while striving to help their child earn a minimum GPA of 4.0. Most of this comes down to funding and providing more for students. I came out of the public school system, as so many do, and the variety of available programs now is far less than when I was in school. I think all creative/arts programs, programs that encourage discovery, need to be protected. I think they should not just be extracurricular, they should be offered as part of the curriculum in every school. I came out of school not knowing what I wanted to do, but I had a writing hobby. I would teach students about being more self-sufficient. There’s a lot of things that students don’t learn until they are out on their own. Many students don’t learn about taxes , how to purchase a home , how to budget your money or how to navigate banking in America. I know a lot of my peers and myself would gain from knowing about many of these things. There should be a class in high school that will help better prepare kids for the real world. Read more>>
