The number one thing we hear from entrepreneurs and artists and creatives when we ask them about their education is about how irrelevant it was to their story. Sure, some folks had wonderful educational experiences, but for many their experiences left them feeling ill prepared for life and their careers. So, we wanted to create a space for folks to share their experiences and ideas for how we can improve our educational system.

There are varying opinions on what our educational system should look like, what they should be teaching, what they shouldn’t be teaching, etc. But I think so many more children would stand a chance of great success if there were more opportunities to learn about business development and trade-work. I feel like college textbooks are just a giant game of “Where’s Waldo”, when if someone were to just hand me reference material, I could remember facts and details in a very detailed manner. If we could change anything about the educational system, it would be to minimize the emphasis of standardized testing. The trending issue in today’s public education is that students are no longer inspired and motivated in school. Instead, there is an increasing emphasis on standardized testing, pushing the focus away from authentic learning and teaching. This takes the fun out of learning for students, and they feel unmotivated about school as a whole. Read more>>

When it comes to education, I think it’s important for us all to remember that not every child is built the same and that they all take in and process information differently. Some are hardwired for math and science whereas others are partial to literature and history. And for me, I feel that education should not be just one way, but several different ways in order to serve all types of learners. For instance, my son Opie is in a private virtual school called Sora which is more project-focused versus standard tests and homework. Read more>>

What I would change about the educational system is giving each individual the access to fully understand what it means to be financially literate. It’s a shame that over 65% of the students that graduate from high school don’t even have a savings account. We speak about how generations to come need to understand what creating generational wealth is but to do that we have to start somewhere. Read more>>

I would implement finance classes teaching students about 401k, taxes, credit, how to save. Set them up for success cause most 20yr olds don’t really know anything about any of that, that’s why most people have debit or poor money management skills these days cause they were never taught how to use it. From the time that you are a small child, the public education system teaches you that everything you do is to prepare you for college which in turn prepares you for a well paying job. In order to be successful, you must get a bachelor’s degree (preferably a STEM degree) and start working at a corporate 9-5. I was so sure that this was the path to success and happiness, that when I decided in 5th grade, yes… 5th grade, that I wanted to be an engineer, I never let myself consider anything else as a viable option. Beyond all things, my biggest passion in life is to make preventative education a standard. I feel like we always focus on solutions, but not methods of prevention. From poverty, to healthcare, there are major discrepancies within our education system that could be resolved with mandatory education on topics that “matter”. I’m a firm believer in the phrase “If you know better, you’ll do better. “ and I feel that with the proper education, things could run more smooth. Read more>>

As a former teacher in my industry, I feel there should be opportunity for high school students to visit/work/mini-internship/mentor programs in the fields they are interested in. They are really making a “blind” decision when they choose their area of study in college. Having an experience could point them in a better direction. Read more>>
