The number one thing we hear from entrepreneurs and artists and creatives when we ask them about their education is about how irrelevant it was to their story. Sure, some folks had wonderful educational experiences, but for many their experiences left them feeling ill prepared for life and their careers. So, we wanted to create a space for folks to share their experiences and ideas for how we can improve our educational system.

I believe that the reason why many individuals find themselves struggling emotionally, financially and physically is because as children and young adults we are not introduced to skills on how to develop personal potential. This is a great question and right up my alley. I am currently studying Black girlhood so my thoughts surround what I know about that particular field, but all students of color are deserving of safe spaces that meet their needs. Education, as we know it to be, doesn’t work for all of our students. Urban education as we know it isn’t the best either. I would change education into a space of healing where students of color are nurtured, invested in, and allowed to thrive safely. Read more>>

I’m a big advocate for trades. I’m from the era when in junior high I took woodshop, typewriter, cooking, and graphic design classes. In high school, I took a course in graphic design, using a computer program called Typestyler 2.0 to digitally create art and the lab’s screen printer to make t-shirts with the logos of hip-hop groups like Freestyle Fellowship, the Hieroglyphics, and the UMCs. What I would change about the current educational system is to incorporate Trade skills careers. Older tradesman are retiring and there are small channel of trade careers to replace the expertise that is needed. Vocational schools are needed across America and a lot of these careers are high paying skillsets. Read more>>
