So often mission and purpose driven folks have fascinating stories about where they draw their inspiration from. Often it’s a historical figure and so we’ve highlighted some of those conversations around historical figures and what some of the best and brightest have learned from them.

The historical figure that I have learned from has been AG Gaston. There is a great book on him called The Black Titan. I learned that you have to keep improving every year and that you need to think about the infrastructure around initiatives and solutions because that will determine whether those initiatives or solutions are successful. History is such a huge part of my story, and is the structural foundation of who I am as an artist and person. When I was a child my mom and grandmother would take my twin sister and I to the metropolitan museum of art, the museum of natural history, MOMA, and pretty much every other major museum NYC has to offer. Throughout my life, I have learned about many historical figures and delved into their lives and contributions to society. Of all the people I have studied, Dr. Carter G. Woodson has to be the person I look up to the most because I feel like our desires are similarly aligned. Dr. Woodson had a deep desire to not only study Black history, but he also sought to share Black history with the world. He dedicated most of his life to his passion and is known as the “father of Black history”.
