Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzy Carbrey
Hi Suzy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey to becoming an Executive Function and ADHD Coach is deeply rooted in personal experiences and professional evolution.
Professionally, I began as a speech-language pathologist specializing in cognitive-communication therapy within an adult medical rehabilitation setting. This role provided me with an in-depth understanding of how cognitive and executive functioning impacts daily life and rehabilitation. I discovered a passion for helping individuals improve their attention, memory, organization, time management, and follow-through skills.
In 2019, driven by my entrepreneurial spirit and the desire for a better work/life balance, I decided to open my private practice. Initially focused on speech therapy, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led to a significant shift. I began receiving calls from adults with ADHD struggling to manage remote work, which quickly ignited my passion for executive function and ADHD coaching.
Recognizing the growing need, I rebranded my practice to focus exclusively on ADHD and executive function coaching. This transition allowed me to utilize my background in cognitive rehabilitation while developing new, innovative strategies tailored to the unique challenges faced by my clients. Today, I support adults, parents, and professionals in navigating their executive function challenges, helping them achieve better life balance and success in their personal and professional lives.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey to where I am today has had a few bumps.
One significant challenge was transitioning from a structured medical rehabilitation setting to establishing my own private practice. Shifting from a speech-language pathologist to an entrepreneur required learning the intricacies of running a business, which was initially outside my comfort zone.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was another hurdle. I had planned to focus on speech therapy, but the sudden shift to remote work and the increase in adults struggling with ADHD led me to pivot my focus. Adapting to the changing needs of my clients and transitioning to virtual services required quick thinking and flexibility.
Building a reputation and client base in a specialized field like ADHD and executive function coaching was also challenging. Establishing credibility, particularly in a remote setting, involved creating valuable content, engaging with potential clients, and continuously learning to stay updated with the latest research and best practices.
Despite these challenges, each struggle taught me valuable lessons and contributed to my growth as a professional and entrepreneur. The resilience and adaptability I developed through these experiences have been instrumental in shaping my practice and enabling me to support my clients effectively.
