Today we’d like to introduce you to Roc Gray.
Hi Roc, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Although I always knew I wanted to be the owner of a performance training company it wasn’t until my senior year in college that things became “real.” In 2015, my eligibility to play football ran out, as I was transferring for the second time so I began training at a sports performance gym in hopes to try out for the CFL. I needed an internship, so I communicated with the owners, and they offered me an opportunity. After watching me train on my own a couple of times during open gym hours because I couldn’t afford their programming, they immediately offered me a job. Since then, I have been in strength and conditioning learning, growing and making an impact.
It is really simple to me as to how I am where I am today: I kept going! In a 10-year career and almost 5 years of owning a business now I have seen so many highs and lows but the thing that has kept me going is my faith in God! He has given me the strength and resources to maintain and build a business that allows me to check all of the boxes I could ever want in a career.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe I speak for all business owners when I say there is nothing smooth about owning a business. There are always going to be highs and lows because that comes with the territory. I was spoiled my first two years of business because everything was going well and flowed but year three…. year three things SLOWED DOWN! I had to learn on the go, apply tactics that I hadn’t tested and leveraged all I could to keep business going. This lasted for a little over a year which caused me to doubt my mission, consider pivoting and almost calling it quits. It seemed like during that time period everything was tough: communication with clients, marketing and even my own seemed to be a challenge. BUT GOD, I made it through, and things are looking better than when I first started the business, but I learned A LOT during this time period. I firmly believe with no struggle we don’t deepen our connection with God and establishing the toughness we need to overcome.
We’ve been impressed with Go Hard Performance Systems, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Go Hard Performance Systems is a human & sports performance brand helping individuals “Grow in Greatness” by building sustainable daily habits. We specialize in improving athletic performance by building speed, strength, conditioning, reactivity, agility and mobility. Movement proficiency, building confidence, and our ability to adapt to client’s needs is what makes us who we are. We love to coach the person as well as the athlete because we have experienced that relationship building goes well beyond in-person interaction; the more connected an athlete feels the better they can receive information to directly impact their performance. I am extremely proud of the loyalty of our clients; once someone experiences our coaching, they don’t leave which speaks to how we treat our clients and the results we drive. Our laser timing system and speed training has set us apart drastically in the past year! I want everyone who witnesses our coaching, whether they utilize our services or not to be able to speak highly on how we educate the masses. There can be a great deal of misinformation out there, but we want to be a pillar of intelligent training practices.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
So funny enough, I began running my business full-time in the midst of covid. It was July of 2020, just a little over two months before my wife & I were to get married that I decided to take the leap of faith. During this process I learned about God’s grace and mercy as well as how greatly he had a plan for me. I also learned that if you offer a quality service and truly give people your best, they will follow you! Operating outdoors taught me how to be resourceful in my coaching and view things from a different lens. This attributes to my success today because I am twice as creative and commanding in my coaching than I could have ever imagined.
