Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Webster
Hi Nathan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After leaving the United States Marine Corps in 2000, my only career post-high school, I went through one of the roughest patches of my life. Two of my outlets were working out and running. I worked out twice a day and ran approximately 30 miles a week. After several weeks, I was leaner and stronger, and everyone noticed, so I focused on competing in a bodybuilding show. After a few months of learning the demands of the sport and eyeing my competition, I was hopeless for a competitive activity.
One day, while working in my gym, one guy spent about 30 minutes convincing me to do the Portland Marathon. The event was in three months, and a marathon is 26.2 miles. Now, I was in great shape but not marathon shape.
I decided to do the 5k instead, but I’d get colleagues to do it with me. After recruiting for the next few weeks, I had four other colleagues, and we had our team. Unfortunately, my time expired, and registration had already closed.
Amazingly, 12 years flew by, and I regretted the first Sunday in October every year. I was done being left out. In 2013, I finally completed my Portland Marathon. It was a complete lifestyle change, but it was worth every minute of it. The race catapulted me to take charge of my life. I stopped allowing others, deferring to others, delegating my wants, and expecting others to give me my dream.
This led to a realignment of my lifestyle. It was a lot of pain, obstacles, healing, and enormous hard work. Don’t get it twisted; I’m happier now than ever, and it led to starting my marketing agency in 2014. Once the company took off, my life changed in intentionality because it empowered me to be fully aligned with my faith, dreams, and livelihood.
From starting college in 2001 and my nonprofit, Dream Big Community Center, in 2004, I was always learning but never fully aligned in all my endeavors and aspirations. It took me a significant amount of time to figure out the best “vehicle” for my journey.
Currently, I love being a marketing and nonprofit consultant. It allows me to control my destiny and do things I love because it’s about living my best life. Throughout the years of being in the community, I’ve found to truly love what I do and never see it as a job.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
– Letting go of the past
– Healing from trauma
– Creating healthy relationships
– Having to evolve and expand outside Vancouver
– Building a team to assist where my weaknesses shined
– Saying “yes” to everything to pay the bills when I had zero experiences
– Letting go of key responsibilities and delegating
– Accepting yesterday’s success is to learn from, not to repeat
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My agency isn’t a typical ‘marketing agency’ one may think of when it comes to marketing. We do business development consulting, marketing strategy consulting and implementation, and websites. I also run a marketing podcast, Let’s Talk Marketing with NDUB (http://letstalkmarketingpodcast.com/). Last but not least, I do a conference (https://letsconnectpnw.com/) focused on bringing every good person and business within the community to ‘connect’ and have authentic conversations. Our goal is to ensure small businesses win the day, every day, by specializing in brand monetization.
I’m proud to say that I don’t have business cards or attend networking events to bolster my business. My lead generators are my clients and business partners because I see them as an extension of my family, which is why everything I own is under my business, NW & Associates, LLC (https://nwebsterllc.com/).
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Most importantly, I like being me, but there are many things I like, such as golfing, being on the water, beautiful architecture, the Pacific Northwest outdoors (not the rain), being competitive, laughing, and having a good time with great people.
For every ‘dislike’ comes a blessing, so it’s a double-edged sword.
