Hi Michelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a Korean born, adopted (Japanese and American) US citizen, heritage, culture and technology has been on the forefront of my life. As a female entrepreneur and rebel of sorts, I never followed the pack and pursued the lesser traveled road with curiosity and a passion for authenticity, artistry and ingenuity.
A\N/A A Non-Agency® formed in 2016 was a proclamation of my journey to be my best, true self. It’s core ethos was founded by a mission to amplify individual strength, and to help other talented people do the same in an industry that didn’t embrace the power of the one and the capabilities of the collective.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Elon Musk has a quote that sums it up. “Being an entrepreneur is like eating glass and staring into the abyss of death.” You don’t know what you don’t know. Every mistake and every decision feels like the beginning or the end. It’s not just the feast or famine cycles of projects and work. Every detail, task and decision has to be given the same weight and consideration. It takes as much effort to win and deliver a $50,000 project as a $5MM.
Scalability is a challenge when you’ve built a business around leadership and creative vision that is the essence of you. I’ve found a network of amazing talent who work seamlessly whenever the opportunity arises. However, what makes each of us special is the freedom and independence we are accustomed to. Unifying these unicorns is never easy and leading them requires a great deal of thoughtful consideration, and trust.
Likewise, winning the client trust and partnership also requires a personal extension of your reputation and time. Personal relationships develop and with that comes the nuances of separating business decisions and outcomes. You can’t clone yourself and there are times when it’s difficult to remove yourself from the day-day work which can stunt growth.
