Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Miller.
Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My husband and I started Crescent Simples as a way to make better quality mixers available for home use. We were both bartenders in New Orleans and made fun flavored simple syrups to use in drinks. We always used fresh fruit and herbs and raw sugar to make them. At the time, in 2019, there just weren’t any options with high quality ingredients like that bottled and available for home use. We started selling them at farmer’s markets, then local stores, and now we’re carried in over 300 stores across 40 states.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t know if owning a small business has ever been smooth! Especially starting only a year before COVID hit, we ran into lots of challenges with our supply chain, the economy, and even our production facility in 2020. The kitchen we were producing out of shut down with no reopening date in March of 2020. We had to scramble to find a new production facility and get all of our inspections done before we ran out of the product we had on hand. There have been lots of hiccups like that, but we’ve always made it through. My partner and I are very solutions oriented; we know there will be problems in a small business, so when they come up we immediately start brain storming solutions and don’t let them get us down for long.
We’ve been impressed with Crescent Simples, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Crescent Simples is a line of fresh fruit and herb infused raw cane sugar simple syrups and cocktail mixers. Our products are completely free of additives, preservatives, “natural flavors”, etc., they are only made from real, fresh ingredients. They can be used for cocktails and mocktails, but also for soda water, tea, coffee, lemonade, the list goes on!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We frequently partner with local farms to source our ingredients. In fact, two of our syrups, Apple Spice and Peach Hibiscus, are made exclusively with fruit from a family-owned orchard in my hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia.
