Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Broadbent.
Hi Lisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Drawing started for me when I was little. By the time High School came around, I was engrossed in Technical Drawing as one of my subjects. Fast-forward to my early 20s, and I had the most uncanny urge to paint. One Saturday morning, I got up and drove to an art store in downtown Brisbane, Queensland, where I was living at the time, bought a canvas, a bunch of paints, brushes, a sketchbook (I still have that today), a palette knife set and a palette. Not knowing what the hell I was doing, the excitement was overwhelming – I couldn’t wait to get home to start planning my first painting. That was 32 years ago.
During my late 20’s I scored an incredible job with Footlocker Europe as an assistant buyer, so I packed up my life in Australia and headed for Amsterdam where I spent 3 incredible years traveling Europe for work and living in Amsterdam. It was also a time when I explored my creative side and painted constantly in the whimsical style that I had been harnessing, for around 6-7 years.
I must have done something right as Footlocker sent me to the USA where I flourished as a Buyer and later a Divisional Merchandise Manager. I traveled from the USA to Canada and back again for approx 15 years for work, always painting as I went along, learning from others that were waaaay better than I was. During my time in Canada, I took classes at OCAD in charcoal and 3D drawing. That was when I also got into epoxy finishing.
Fast Forward to today, I fell in love with Fluid Art around 6 years ago. It appealed to my technical side as the chemistry involved was such a huge part of Fluid Art. I was lucky enough to learn from some of the best fluid artists globally and so began my journey into Fluid Art, combining my love of color theory and very large birchwood finish pieces!!!!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think as an artist the road is ever smooth sailing. The struggle is real! Whether that be internally as an artist, continually pushing your own boundaries, or externally, when your work doesn’t sell, or a gallery won’t even return your call….. ugh! It can be debilitating.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
After spending 26 years in global Corporate Retail, I decided to create my own consulting business. It was time. I hustled for only a couple of months and found myself consulting for a manufacturing, tech, and fulfillment business with a very interesting twist to their model. After digging into their business, I could see how I could help them grow their top-line sales by implementing forward strategies and helping them restructure across their different silos.
Breathing new air into a business and collaborating with the different business sectors, has actually breathed fresh air into me.
It has also allowed me time to breathe more creative air into my art business, Flywallart.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
OMG, there are sooooo many people over the years who have helped me grow as a person, a business head, and as an artist. I have always had a mentor or mentors. My belief is that you can always do better, be better and you can’t do that on your own. It takes a village! Mind, Body and Soul!
From my Mum and Dad being the business heads they were, helping me to build my own wholesale business in Australia, to the wonderful mentors in corporate retail that I’ve had over the years and still do. The many incredible artists over the years have helped me shape my work – there are hundreds of people who have helped me. I will be always forever grateful for the guidance, respect, and honesty.
