Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliette McGill.
Hi Juliette, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As someone who loved playing sport and moving as a child growing up in the 90’s it was no surprise that diet culture got ahold of me, and as a teen into my 20’s I continued to love sport but hate my body. Through a career in different areas of sport however my passion lay in encouraging more and more women to participate, and eventually I qualified as a PE teacher with the intention of doing the same.
However, just before I turned 30, I became pregnant and it changed my perspective on bodies. After having had my son, I felt the weight of these body ideals and expectations even more and chose to retrain to work in prenatal and postpartum fitness to show women that they were still incredible AND to see their bodies change without judgement. This has evolved to working with women in all stages of life and today I work full time in my wellbeing business, striving to spread this message far and wide.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles along the way have certainly been balancing real life/ motherhood and pushing for a new career, I knew this would be well received by the right people, but I had to actually get started! From then on, the biggest challenges are usually self belief related and I work with a selected number of coaches and lean on friends to bring me back to my mission!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Aluna Wellbeing is founded on the belief that all bodies deserve to access movement/ sport/ fitness without preconceived ideas or judgement. And the power and knowledge you have of your own body when you do those things just for you. Whilst I’m aware it is so much bigger than this, the work we do is individualised to ensure that the pressure is off and we realise the capabilities of our bodies once more, like we did as young children! I do Personal Training very differently to the general PT population where I combine intuition alongside structure, I allow clients the space to explore their feelings and find consistency in movement from a place of fun, enjoyment and energising. No more telling people what to do and more freedom to think for ourselves! This is a mission I will be taking into UK schools with a clear ideology to change the way we discuss exercise, food, wellbeing and bodies among the next generations.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
A more positive future is rooted in self trust and autonomy, so wherever you can challenge those stereotypical body ideals, the way people speak about others and take back the power of your body.
