Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Jamison.
Hi Julie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got into the industry of Interior Design by accident in a sense (nothing is ever an accident though is it?).
About 15 years ago, I was feeling unfulfilled even though I had accomplished so much… I had landed my dream job of HR Director, was married, with 3 kids at the time – now 4, home owner and more, but the job that I thrived in for so many years was killing my soul slowly.
The black and white, cut and dry aspects that I once loved about HR, were no longer joyous. In fact, my mental health was suffering and looking back now, I know that it was my soul rebelling because it knew that my life was meant for something else…. something fulfilling.
I began to experience one of the worst tower moments of my life. My career was crumbling in front of my eyes and I was trying everything to duck tape it together because although, I was unfulfilled, I was also comfortable with my life and wasn’t ready to make the necessary changes to create an aligned life, but spirit has a way to catch our attention when we’re being stubborn.
In the midst of the chaos my life had become, it would get worse when my one year old son was severely burned. He spent a week in the Burn Unit and I blamed myself.
Things got worse. I experienced my first panic attack walking down the streets of NYC because I was feeling so torn between being comfortable and miserable or being free so I finally listened to my heart and I quit my job to take care of my son. Man was I terrified, but my heart was telling me that I’d be fine.
Shortly after, my husband had a stroke and at this point I was really not well. When he got better, I crashed. I couldn’t get out of bed. I just really wanted to disappear – I needed to escape.
I don’t recall how I started watching TV, but I stumbled upon HGTV and for the first time in a long time, I felt joy. Watching their shows became a life line for me. I began predicting the changes the Designers would make to the spaces and I felt inspired to decorate my own home because through it all our new construction home had no sazon to it because I was too busy to give it the attention that it was yearning for.
I was slowly coming alive again through every paint stroke, every pillow sewn, and all of the changes that I had made to transform our home into our safe space. I had returned to myself.
Through it all, I connected with my inner child and remembered that before my trauma, I had a love of the arts from illustration, fashion, music, dance, all of it, but I was forced to leave that behind to survive and so I had forgotten the joy and freedom that color, textures, patterns had once brought me.
But I eventually remembered and I wanted to share my gift with the world by creating safe spaces for others, spaces that are who we are….beautiful, resilient, and joyous.
Throughout my journey, I have connected deeply with Astrology and have quickly seen the connection between our unique birth charts and how it can allow us to create a space that is like no other – a space that is unique. I have found my calling and I’m honored to be able to share it with the world.
A lot of times, people don’t know their design style or they’re heavily influenced by design trends and all along, the answer to it all lies in your birth chart.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all.
I struggled with so much like being seen, pricing, sales and so much more. One thing that no one ever really talks about is how entrepreneurship will put a spotlight on all of your insecurities and force you to face all of the things that you’ve been avoiding. It’s truly a spiritual journey!
I had a really hard time with being seen because I’m super shy and an introvert. I also hate public speaking. Who would’ve known that when I made the decision to become an entrepreneur that I would be embarking on a journey of self-discovery and healing,
As a result, marketing was painful for me, but I had to figure it out. I had to put myself out there even when it was beyond uncomfortable because if no one knows about you and your services, you won’t make any sales and if you’re not making any sales, then you don’t have a business, what you have is an expensive hobby.
Pricing was another huge one for me because my work is tied to helping my community, but in that I noticed that I was putting my insecurities on others by making up a story in my mind that my community could not afford interior design services when in fact, they could and were willing to happily pay for my services.
We’ve been impressed with Redo Your Room Online, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have a virtual interior decorating business that specializes in creating peaceful and unique spaces with the help of Astrology and other wellness modalities.
Throughout my journey I’ve realized that all everyone is seeking is peace and a safe space, but not just any space, a unique space. Our birth chart says so much about who we are. It really is a tool that allows us to see ourselves in all of our facets so by using your unique birth chart, you are able to create a peaceful home that is a true reflection of who you truly are. No other space will look like your space and that is amazing since often times we can allow inspiration to take over and the end result is what I like to call a “cut and paste” room. A room that looks like every pin on Pinterest, every image on Google instead of it being a unique space just as unique as you are.
I am most proud of finally finding that sweet spot of my two loves: interior design and Astrology. Interior design is special, but even more so for people of color because it provides us with not just comfort, but acceptance. Our homes should be a reflection of us, colorful, bright, joyful, textured and so much more. We are such a unique people and our homes are a reflection of that and is meant to comfort and support us as well while allowing us to just be our true selves in our homes.
It should be filled with the things, colors, and textures that bring us joy and express who we are – our unique style and personality. Using a birth chart is how I’m able to create a home for my clients like no other and that is in alignment with who they are from the furniture pieces, textures, colors and more have all been carefully selected to mirror their unique birth chart.
In addition to a unique space, creating a space that provides peace and safety is key as well especially for people of color.
We deserve a safe space where we can be our true selves and let our guard down and just truly relax from the chaos of the outside world. Creating this sense of peace and safety can be done through interior design by the selection of the pieces you bring into the space, the colors, textures and all of the elements that make up design because at the end of the day interior design is so much deeper that just a beautiful space. It should bring you peace.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I feel that the move towards what is being labeled as Holistic Design is growing fast and that is due to everyone craving a sense of peace in their lives. People are seeking a slower paced life and a home that feels peaceful.
I feel that the pandemic really showed people just how important our homes are to our mental health and how the environments that we spend time in really affect us and our mood. We were forced to be indoors and many people realized the connection between their homes and their wellness. Many realized just how much they’ve been neglecting their homes by not being intentional with they way it is decorated. They have realized that they were not pouring love into their space and not honoring their homes as they should because when we honor our homes, it reciprocates that love by supporting us during our life journey.
