Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Buyer
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m grateful to have been a part of the entertainment industry for over twenty years. I got my start casting extras and commercials in Chicago, Illinois for a company called Holzer & Ridge Casting I was the senior casting coordinator at Warner Bros. Television, (Eastwick, Zero Effect, Thieves, Harry Stone, Bull), the casting associate at Ulrich/Dawson/Kritzer Casting (Rude Awakening, Any Day Now, The Gregory Hines Show, Glory, Rag and Bone), and the former casting associate at Weber & Associates Casting at MGM (Dead Like Me, She Spies, Fame Encore, Stargate -SG1, Soldier of Fortune, The Outer Limits, The Crow, 12 Angry Men, The Gingerbread Man, A Hero From Zero). I left casting to open up my own company, Marketing The Actor, making a name for myself with my unique approach to selling an actors product as well as the audition process. I now teach “The Formula” to beginning and advanced acting students, which is the only audition technique class taught entirely from the casting perspective, and offer private one-on-one mock audition classes as well as group classes for all levels in person in NYC, and on Zoom, and can be seen teaching on camera classes at the Professional Performing Arts School in New York.. I continue to be an invited keynote speaker at numerous universities, conducting marketing seminars for their graduating seniors and theatre students. I was also the adjunct professor for Columbia College, Chicago for ten years, running the Semester In LA Acting Program. My first book, Inside The Audition Room is now available at the Samuel French Bookstore in Los Angeles, The Drama Bookshop in NYC, Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com. My latest project is the Need A Reader Actor App, now available on the App Store & Google Play. Need A Reader connects actors with readers for auditions, self tapes, classes, rehearsals and practice.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t know anyone in the entertainment industry who has had a smooth path to success. Like so many of us, I too have battled, but am fortunate I have found my way. I actually got my degree in theater, thinking I wanted to be an actor, but I realized about a week before I was about to graduate that this was not something I wanted to do. I was fortunate enough to find casting, which catapulted me into coaching actors for a living. I also felt the struggle with all of my side projects along the way. I wrote a book called “Inside The Audition Room”, but it took five years to finish it. It has also taken five years with the app I created – The Need A Reader Actor App. I was creating something new for the entertainment industry, and I had to make sure to get it right. It’s a terrific product, and really solves serval self taping issues for actors. I’m so excited about it.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I teach on camera audition technique classes online and in person in NYC. Sides are sent to each actor two to three days before we meet, creating a casting like atmosphere many actors crave. Booking the job seems to be the most difficult part of the process, so I collaborate with actors on new and fresh ideas that can be added into the audition. I think what separates me as a teacher is that I am completely honest while still being one hundred percent supportive. I have no interest in telling an actor what to do – we work together. Besides, that type of “copied” performance will come off as stale and uninteresting. I want my clients do be excited with the discovery – to be excited about the journey – when we sit down to work together. I always tell my students that there is not one right way to do any of this, but I do pride myself in helping actors create new and interesting choices that they can use. I currently offer three on camera classes during the week (there is a waitlist) along with one on one private coaching.
What does success mean to you?
Getting the opportunity to do what you love to do each and every day. That would be my definition of success. I’m at my happiest when I am able to create.
