My journey began in the United States Air Force, where I served as a Chief Master Sergeant during the Vietnam War. Those years were formative for me; not only did I have the privilege of flying planes, but I also learned invaluable lessons about leadership, resilience, and the importance of service to others.
After my military service, I transitioned into education, starting as a teacher in the New York City public schools. The classroom became my second home, where I dedicated myself to empowering students and fostering a love for learning. My passion for education propelled me through various roles, culminating in my retirement as a university dean. It was a journey filled with challenges and triumphs, and I am proud to have contributed to the academic growth of countless individuals.
Parallel to my educational career, I embraced my role as Chairlady of my family’s 95-year-old enterprise. Leading this legacy has been both a responsibility and a privilege, ensuring that our family’s values and commitment to community service are upheld.
However, my true calling has always been in ministry. I made history as the first female and person of color to be consecrated as an Archbishop in the United States. This milestone was not just a personal achievement; it represented a significant step forward for representation in religious leadership. My faith has guided me throughout my life, and I am dedicated to using my voice to uplift others, promote inclusivity, and foster spiritual growth.
Each chapter of my life has been interconnected, driven by a commitment to service, education, and faith. I believe that through our experiences, we can inspire future generations to break barriers and pursue their own paths with courage and conviction.

Absolutely, the journey has been anything but smooth, and I think it’s crucial to acknowledge the complexities that come with being a female person of color in today’s world.
From the outset, I’ve encountered challenges that stem from both gender and racial biases. In many professional environments, I often found myself needing to prove my capabilities far more than my peers. There’s an underlying expectation that as a woman of color, I should be grateful for opportunities, which can create an implicit pressure to perform exceptionally well, often at the expense of my own well-being.
Navigating these dynamics required not only resilience but also strategic thinking. For instance, there were instances where my contributions were overlooked in meetings, which meant I had to learn to advocate for myself assertively. This wasn’t just about speaking up; it was about finding the right moments to assert my perspective in a way that commanded respect.
Moreover, mentorship and networking were also hurdles. The networks that traditionally support individuals in advancing their careers often lack diversity. I had to be intentional about seeking out mentors who understood the unique challenges I faced and who were willing to advocate for me in spaces where I wasn’t always welcomed. Building those relationships took persistence and a willingness to step outside my comfort zone.
But it’s essential to frame these struggles within a broader narrative of empowerment. Each challenge not only sharpened my skills but also deepened my commitment to advocating for diversity and inclusion in my field. I’ve come to appreciate the importance of creating spaces where voices like mine can thrive.
Ultimately, while the road has been fraught with obstacles, it has also been rich with learning and growth. I believe that my experiences have equipped me to contribute to change, and I’m passionate about empowering others who may be facing similar struggles. In many ways, it’s this duality of challenge and opportunity that shapes my perspective and fuels my drive to succeed.

We are dedicated to serving communities through our extensive network of clergy, churches, and missions, which include hospitals, shelters, and help centers. Our mission is rooted in compassion and outreach, aiming to provide spiritual, emotional, and physical support to those in need, regardless of their background or belief. What sets us apart is our global reach and our holistic approach to ministry—addressing not just spiritual needs but also practical ones.
As the Chairlady of Jabez Global Enterprise, I take immense pride in leading this 95-year-old organization founded by my mother in 1930. Our enterprise has grown tremendously over the decades, and today we have employees on every continent. We operate 300 businesses across various sectors, including agriculture, oil, pharmaceuticals, fast food chains, healthcare, and more. This diverse portfolio allows us to contribute significantly to economic development and job creation worldwide.
What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is our legacy of resilience and innovation. Jabez Global Enterprise has not only survived but thrived through changing economic landscapes, adapting to new markets and challenges. What do you like and dislike about the city?
As someone who has always lived on the East Coast and only frequently visits the West Coast, I have a particular fondness for the charming town of Waterford, Connecticut where I reside . Nestled along the picturesque shoreline of New England, Waterford offers a unique blend of natural beauty and culinary delights. The waterfront views are breathtaking, and the array of restaurants showcases the region’s fresh seafood, making dining out a delightful experience.
However, one aspect I find less appealing is the sense of community. While Waterford has its own charm, I’ve noticed that people tend to keep to themselves, which can create a feeling of isolation. In contrast, cities like my hometown of New York City, specifically Brooklyn;foster a unique sense of unity, where collaboration and connection thrive among residents. This dynamic makes for a vibrant atmosphere that often feels missing in smaller towns like Waterford. Overall, while I appreciate the serene beauty of Waterford, I can’t help but miss the rich communal spirit found in larger urban centers.
