Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgia Ratcliff.
Hi Georgia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I studied to be a veterinarian in Queensland, Australia. After Graduating i completed my internship at Advanced Vetcare in Melbourne, Australia. I then worked in general practice in Australia for 2 years before moving to New York City.
I have been working at Riverside Veterinary Care since this time as an associate veterinarian and became the Medical Director in 2019.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Working as a veterinarian is a roller coaster for most of us! Doing the best for every pet I see is so important to me. Achieving this means being able to communicate the needs of the pet to the client so that they are a partner in their pet’s care. This sometimes means working through whatever the client is going through as well – financially, emotionally, or with the preconceived knowledge and experience they already have. Generally I find people want to do their best also, but we have to reach agreement.
Working as a manager has certainly not been smooth! Humans are incredibly complex!
We’ve been impressed with Riverside Veterinary Care on Columbus, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Riverside Veterinary Care on Columbus is a boutique veterinary hospital on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. We practice gold standard veterinary medicine guided by Fear Free techniques.
We were the first veterinary hospital in NYC to achieve Fear Free accreditation. This means that we consider the emotional health of our patients equal to the physical health and handle and work with patients accordingly to give them the most comfortable veterinary experience. It is not acceptable to us to have a terrified animal and to push them through interventions.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
To achieve large scale change requires passion, patience and persistence.
