Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgia Carbone
Hi Georgia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story is full of twists and turns but this current chapter clearly begins when I moved to Santa Fe a little over 6 years ago.
I have always been creative and I’ve always loved exploring different types of creative expression. I deeply enjoy bringing ideas to life and moving through the magic of the process. — There is nothing like the feeling of inspiration moving through your hands and shaping materials into form and image. — I’ve also always been a teacher. I delight in sharing what I’ve learned and in supporting others on their creative paths. I think that’s why opening a gallery was so natural for me, even though I never imagined I would support other artists in this way. I find it very fulfilling to create space for artists who are engaged in sincere and earnest inquiries into life’s greatest mysteries, and to be a bridge between these often obscure artists and the collectors who are looking for them.
The space that I’ve opened in Santa Fe is very organic, it continues to grow, evolve, and define itself. It has a lot in common with typical contemporary art spaces. There are classes, a gallery, guest artist workshops, talks, events, and a curated gift shop. What sets us apart is that our focus is on metaphysical art and practices; we have paintings and photography, but we also sell boutique tarot decks, and offer metaphysical experiences like Tarot readings and Reiki energy healing.
So why open a metaphysical-themed art space? Truthfully, I had no choice. That’s just who I am. For 20 years, I jumped through all the typical hoops of undergrad, graduate school, art workshops/residencies/retreats etc. As an artist, I exhibited and performed in contemporary art spaces, galleries and museums, and tried my best to do the usual art professor/art professional path, but it just wasn’t the right fit. I’ve always been highly sensitive and intuitive, and frankly I’m too distracted by dreams, visions, and a spiritual view of life to follow a typical career path.
It felt like a risk to open an art space like Georgia Electra because conversations about the “spiritual” and “mystical” dimension of life have often been taboo in conventional art spaces. It seems like that is changing though, the public reception has been tremendously enthusiastic. Our exhibitions have been very well received, and are particularly appealing to younger emerging collectors. It has also been eye-opening to discover how many people have a ghost story, a profound dream, or an unexplainable experience that they are itching to talk about.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest obstacles for me in getting where I am today is my shyness and sensitivity. When I was growing up I would freeze like a deer in headlights if anyone paid attention to me. I’ve had to do a lot of inner work, confronting my fears and insecurities, in order to step out into public space and put my ideas and visions out there. Being a creative person has been instrumental in activating that personal transformation. My path as an artist and creative has absolutely been a healing process as well. Experiencing the empowering and positive affects of art and creativity is a big part of what motivates me to create that space for others.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I officially opened the doors of Georgia Electra in May of 2023, but I had a website under that name as far back as 2017. The transition to a physical space has been fantastic! We offer a lot of different creative experiences from classes and guest artist workshops, to Tarot readings and Reiki energy healing sessions. We also host special events like sound baths, artist talks, social nights, films, and art openings. We house a dedicated gallery space called Electra Gallery, that has taken on a life of its own and hosts exhibitions by local and visiting artists who are directly engaging the metaphysical in form or technique.
Santa Fe is known as a destination for art, spiritual seekers and healers so it is the perfect place for what we do at Georgia Electra. People are coming to us to learn new skills, be inspired, and find out about resources that are available in the area. We are very community oriented and support our local artist and esoteric community through our curated shop of artist-made tarot decks, garments, jewelry, and gifts; and we happily offer referrals for spiritual and healing services when we are booked up.
There are a lot of places in Santa Fe to take art classes, what really sets us apart are the metaphysical subjects we explore and the focus on personal process. We are not trying to turn people into “Artists” with a capital “A”, we are having fun and celebrating art. We want to introduce people to the magic and transformative power of their own creativity; developing technical art skills is just a thing that happens naturally as a by-product of the practice. With that in mind, we’ve recently expanded our class offerings to include weekly watercolor meditation classes, both in-studio and online, which has been really great; and we are starting to offer longer-form 6-week classes for those who crave a more in-depth experience.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The personal quality that has been most important to my success is without a doubt my determination, and at the root of my determination is my desire to do something positive and healing. Georgia Electra is bigger than me, it’s about making a difference in the world and supporting others. If I didn’t have that deeper purpose I would never have had the strength to push through all the scary moments and hard times which have come along with turning this vision into a reality.
