Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Taylor
Hi Doug, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My wife and I got started in a very organic way. I actually got my introduction to sales and marketing through a recording studio I had, which is where I learned the ins and outs of social media and online marketing. I had to figure out how to grow an artist’s following from scratch, so I’d build landing pages that mimicked Spotify’s top 10 artists, and then place my artist on the list. I’d run ads to that page, getting incredibly cheap link clicks, which allowed me to scale the artist’s notoriety fairly quickly.
This experience taught me the value of guerrilla marketing, and while it turns out it’s much easier to sell a cookie than to sell music, that’s how the transition happened. My wife and I started Taylor Chip, a specialty cookie company known for making gourmet, thick cookies with premium ingredients and bold flavors. We began with just the two of us—my wife handling fulfillment and operations while I took on branding and marketing.
Fast forward to today, and Taylor Chip has grown to seven locations, 50 employees, and we’re on track for about $7 million in revenue this year. We’ve always reinvested everything back into the business—whether it was into growing the team or expanding operations. We’ve never had financial backing, so we’ve constantly operated with the mindset of going all in, no matter what obstacles we faced. I think that’s a big part of our success: we’re willing to do more than anyone else to push through tough times.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve faced numerous challenges along the way, especially when opening new locations. For example, during the process of opening our Philly stores, we encountered several delays with contractors and plumbing, which pushed back our timeline significantly. We had to get creative and rely on our network for support to navigate those setbacks.
There have been times when we considered extreme measures to keep the business going, but we’ve always maintained the mindset that we’re going to bet on ourselves and our ability to make it work. Our journey started from nothing, and we’ve consistently poured everything into Taylor Chip, embracing growth—even when it’s uncomfortable—because we know it’s essential for reaching the next level.
We’ve been impressed with Taylor Chip, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Taylor Chip, we pride ourselves on creating an experience that goes far beyond just selling cookies. Our cookies are crafted using a unique low-temperature, long-time bake method. It’s almost like a sous vide process for cookies, and this method results in a texture and flavor that’s unlike anything else on the market. It’s what makes our cookies stand out—creating that perfect balance of crispy on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside. We’ve also spent over two years developing our house-made ice cream, which we’ve recently launched in-store, further enhancing the experience for our customers.
One of the key things I want people to understand about Taylor Chip is our commitment to consistency. We offer 20 to 25 flavors every single day, baked fresh, with a rotating selection of seasonal flavors to keep things exciting. But no matter what you order, you can always expect the same high-quality cookie experience. It’s about creating a nostalgic brand—something that brings people back, year after year, for that same incredible cookie they remember from their last visit.
Our mission goes beyond just great cookies. It’s about building a community around cookies, ice cream, and coffee. We want to be more than just a bakery; we want to be a place where people gather, share moments, and create lasting memories. We care deeply about people, and everything we do—from our products to our customer service—is rooted in that desire to make meaningful connections.
What makes you happy?
I think a lot about my mom when I reflect on happiness. She had a really tough childhood, but despite everything, she’s the happiest person I know. She’s incredibly grateful for every day, and her joy in simply being alive inspires me deeply. It’s that kind of resilience and gratitude that shapes the way I approach both life and business.
For me, building something like Taylor Chip makes me happy because it feels like a way of honoring my mom’s sacrifices. She didn’t have the opportunities that I’ve had, and being able to build something I can be proud of, something she can look at and see as a legacy, means the world to me. It’s about taking everything she taught me—the perseverance, the gratitude, the joy in small things—and channeling that into something bigger.
Taylor Chip isn’t just about cookies for me. It’s about building a brand that reflects those values—community, gratitude, hard work, and joy. Every step of this journey, from our humble beginnings to where we are now with seven locations and counting, has been about cherishing the process as much as the destination. Knowing that I’m creating something meaningful, not only for myself but for my family, my team, and our customers, gives me a deep sense of purpose and happiness.
It’s not just about the growth of the business but also about the moments we create along the way. Whether it’s someone enjoying our unique cookie-baking process, coming back year after year for their favorite flavor, or families gathering around a box of Taylor Chip cookies and ice cream, those moments make it all worthwhile. At the core of everything, it’s about people—connecting, sharing, and building something that lasts. That’s what brings me joy every day.
