Today we’d like to introduce you to David Johnson
David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Although I’ve worn many titles throughout my career, at the end of the day I’ve always been a problem solver. When I found out that there was a career that specialized in developing solutions to problems, Industrial Design, I sought out one of the best schools with that degree, Savannah College of Art and Design and spent the next 3 years mastering my craft.
Fast forward 13 years and while some things are the same, a lot has changed. To give you an idea of just how all over the map my career has been, I’ve worked on consumer electronics, bathtubs, automotive accessories, tactical gear, stage sets, kids toys, pool tables, athletic equipment, windows and clothing, not to mention patent-approved last mile delivery software for the pharmaceutical industry. And most of that is not including the freelancing I was doing in-between. The journey has taken me from coast to coast, through amazing moments and heavy loss, but each venture has made me formidable in the world of design and I can tell you that I am extremely excited about things on the horizon.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve lost my job 5 times without ever being fired, ripped from my teams during acquisitions or being handed a cobra packet at the morning meaning; Everyone around me crying, not understanding that the company has gone under, walking back to my desk to find I’ve been locked out of my computer. The first one was two weeks after my first child was born, and I’ll never forget it.
When I say I’m formidable I mean it. Losing a job is stressful, but working in a volatile industry where people think throwing money at a problem is a solution, and often times the few call the shots over the many. It’s not without its perks. When it’s good its very good. I am personally responsible for over 750,000 successful products in the market, many of which can be found across the united states in stores you go in every week. That is a rewarding feeling, but knowing the stories behind some of these products would make you cringe I promise.
The last main challenge I overcame was transitioning my life to the west coast. In the middle of a very hard situation I found a beacon of hope while being a part of a reality tv show featuring entrepreneurs. I met an amazing person in a high pressure scenario and ended up following them 2000 miles back home and building a life together. We now have a new child on the way, own 3 growing businesses and are truly excited about the future.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
VoidRabbit Apparel creates clothing and accessories for those who thrive in motion. Born from a love of all things fast and evolved into a highly refined performance leather jacket brand, our jackets are a bold, exciting rendition of classic motorcycle gear.
Our jackets cater to all types of riders. From more traditional cuts to aggressive bomber jackets with vented leather to our proprietary leather street hoodies, we merge performance and safety with fashion and sprinkle in my particular aesthetic to create one of a kind masterpieces that are slowly taking over the pacific northwest.
We are available online and love doing custom work for clients, building unique jackets or color matching the accents of a certain vehicle. We take our quality very seriously and work directly with our factory to ensure your expectations are always exceeded.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
To me, being human matters. Putting in the work, listening to the people, experiencing things through other people’s eyes. Remembering that humans are social and belong together.
We spend so much time online or behind a screen being fed divisive information and being forced to choose sides, its easy to forget that you can enjoy yourself, together with people who may have different views of the world than you. That’s one of the reasons I love the motorcycle community as a whole. They just don’t care about the nonsense. They wanna live on the open road, hang with their friends, master their craft and support each other. It is that disregard for skin color, political beliefs, profession or sexual preferences that is a staple in the motorcycle community. We just don’t care. And that’s the way it should be.
