Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlotte Chaze
Hi Charlotte, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Before I began my career in analytics, I was an academic researcher in a windowless basement lab earning $28k a year. I got fed up with being stressed, overworked and underpaid and decided to learn data analytics online. And it worked!
My first Data Analyst job was an Associate Analyst position with a $70k salary, which was already a huge step up from $28k. Less than 4 years after that, I was already making $158k as a Senior Manager in Analytics at AT&T.
After that, I created a TikTok account to tell others about opportunities in Data Analytics and was overwhelmed by the response. I could barely keep up with all the questions and comments. That’s when I created our free Data Analytics Course. The success of this course gave me the confidence to keep going.
So, I used my vacation days to create the Data Analytics Certificate course and quit my job soon after to focus on Break Into Tech. Together with a team of incredible professionals I now help people from all walks of life to break into tech.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not a smooth road by any definition! The first struggle for me was accepting that the career I was in wasn’t making me happy, wasn’t paying me enough and was overworking me.
Then I struggled to convince myself I could learn data analytics and get a job in it. I didn’t fully believe I could, but I tried anyway, and it worked out.
Then I struggled to negotiate my salary. I accepted the first offer for $70k, but quickly realized I could have gotten thousands more. This taught me to ask for more money. It was incredibly scary, but for my next job I negotiated from $85k to $90k. Just asking for more money is usually enough to get it, and the confidence boost I got from that was incredible for my career.
Working as a data analyst was life-changing and I wanted to tell people about it, so I started posting on TikTok and the questions came rolling in. People didn’t just want to know how to get into data analytics, they wanted me to teach them data analytics.
This raised a new question: should I quit my data analyst job so I can teach it instead? I used my vacation days to create Break Into Tech and our data analytics course. After I finished the first iteration of the course, people started enrolling, and within weeks I was already hearing from students who landed their first data analytics jobs! That was enough for me to take the big risk: quit my data analyst job and go in on Break Into Tech full time. I was terrified but working as a data analyst for 4 years had given me enough savings to take the risk.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’re all about empowerment and accessibility and I believe we’re successful because we prioritize people over profit. There are two things I’m most proud of. First is that we’re changing peoples’ lives. Second: we keep our prices as low as possible.
I get messages telling me that our course changed someone’s life, doubled their salary, or empowered them to land a job where they’re respected for the first time. Bootcamps charge $10k to $30k for the same information that we provide for $249.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Seeing my own life and the lives of thousands of students completely change over the past few years has taught me that anyone can do anything they put their mind to. Most people just need someone to believe in them and to support them on this journey. So that’s what I do now.
Learning these valuable skills that allow you to land a great job is the easy part. The hard part is believing in yourself and actually trying. So, I teach data analytics, but I also empower my students and help them build confidence, because that’s what people need the most. Once you believe you can do something, you really can.
