Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Young-onuegbu
Hi Brooke, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up in Chicago, I didn’t see a lot of businesses owned by Black people. I was extremely inspired by the many Black owned businesses I came across during the pandemic. I decided to start my own business, selling roll on fragrances. I spent two years making them before launching the business in fall of 2022.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am currently in grad school for project management and started a career in project management last fall as well. Balancing work, school and a business can be really challenging. I get overwhelmed at times, but time management definitely helps.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make gender neutral fragrances. They are skin-safe and diluted with grapeseed oil. I currently sell on Etsy but will be making my own website in the future. I currently have four fragrances and am in the process of making more.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was extremely energetic and talkative. I couldn’t sit still (still can’t) and what many called a busy body. I also loved reading. My grandfather often said that I’d rather read a book than play with toys. I started writing poetry at 9 and started publishing them in the school newspaper in the 6th grade all the way to my senior year in high school. I played basketball for a few years in elementary school and high school.
