Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Russell
Hi Amanda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From a young age, I was taught that you needed to make money first and find happiness second. While I would have LOVED to be a writer, it didn’t seem like a realistic way to make a living.
After graduating college, I needed to find a full-time job – fast. My lease was up for my college apartment, my roommates and I were heading in different directions, and I needed to find a way to pay rent on a one-bedroom apartment on my own. I started working full-time at a law firm as a litigation assistant and attending school at night to get my paralegal certificate. The nights I wasn’t at school, I was behind a bar, trying to make ends meet. I was living on Three Hour Energy shots and quesadillas, but I was making it work.
Fast forward a few years, I was married, pregnant with my oldest son, and now working as a paralegal in corporate litigation. I loved the complexities of it. But, being on the East Coast with a lot of West Coast clients, I was often in the office until well after midnight. The more my belly grew, the more I knew that this life was not what I wanted. But still, I had bills to pay and a baby to feed, so I marched on.
Within four and a half years, my husband and I had grown from a family of two to a family of five, and something had to give. The price of daycare was taking up the majority of my salary and I felt like I was living in my car with the hour+ daily commute. After the birth of our third child, I became a stay-at-home mom.
Things were tight, but again, we were making it work. I loved being at home with my kids, but I also missed working. To be honest, our finances also missed my paycheck. That’s when my fourth baby was born – Chaos Coordination.
I started the business as a virtual assistant, doing a little bit of everything for everyone. As businesses and babies do, it quickly grew into something else. As I was taking on more clients, I started narrowing down my niche and focusing on the tasks I loved to do.
Now, Chaos Coordination is a content marketing and copywriting firm serving clients across the country. I develop content marketing strategies and write website copy, blogs, and email newsletters for entrepreneurs, small businesses, and nonprofits.
Not only am I making more money than I ever did as a corporate paralegal, but I’m doing it on my own terms with the clients of my choosing. I love getting into the brains of these businesses to write content and copy that promotes their products, services, and missions. It’s truly a blessing to get to do this job every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Is anything ever a smooth road?! haha! It definitely wasn’t, but I don’t think that’s unique to me. I think that’s just life. Between having to find a place to live after college and having three babies in four and a half years, there’s been plenty of struggle to get to this point. And I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t still plenty of struggle ahead.
But, just like those days of living off Three Hour Energy shots and quesadillas, I’ll make it work. The key is surrounding yourself with people who truly believe in and support you. I think society is so focused on individualism, but humans do so much better leaning into community. That’s where my power has come from when the road has gotten hard – the people around me. I know I can do it alone but at this point in my life, I no longer want to.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Chaos Coordination, LLC?
This world is chaotic! Sometimes, you just need someone to step in and coordinate it for you.
That’s where I come in. Content marketing and copywriting can feel so overwhelming to brands, businesses, and entrepreneurs who would rather focus on their product or service. With my expertise, attention to detail, and out-of-the-box thinking, I help my clients nail down a content strategy that hooks their audience and a copy strategy that sells their product. I believe so strongly in the power of words and love that I get to use mine to help my clients grow their missions.
I focus on website content creation, including landing pages and blog writing, as well as outreach like email marketing and monthly e-newsletters. Through a well-rounded content strategy, I help my clients establish themselves as brands and businesses people WANT to work with and buy from.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, true success is found in how much you improve the lives of the people around you.
What is the point of this life if it’s not a fun ride? I love that my business gives me the time and energy to sit on the boards of a local education organization and a youth sports league. I also serve as a Planning Commissioner in my small town’s government. Having a job that allows me to check all of my financial boxes, be a present mom and wife, and serve my community is so special to me.
We owe so much to the communities that raise us, and it’s important to give back when we are able to. I know what it’s like to feel like you have no one fighting for you. So, while I’m in a position to help others, I’m going to do it.
If you want true, sustainable success and fulfillment, help the people around you and leave your community better than you found it.
