Lisa, we loved learning your story, but I think our audience is going to appreciate learning about the product side of your story as well. So, maybe you can help bring everyone up to speed?
Thank you so much for inviting me to discuss my children’s books! I’m thrilled to share the heart and purpose behind them, as they each hold a special message aimed at making a difference.
Let’s begin with The Let’s Talk! Series. This series is centered on autism and friendship, aiming to break down barriers and open conversations between children and families about neurodiversity. Each book focuses on a unique social issue, paired with an engaging activity to show that children with autism can participate fully and joyfully. The inspiration for this series came from my work in ABA, where I saw firsthand the need to represent autistic children in stories celebrating their strengths and friendships. These books are designed to encourage understanding, inclusivity, and meaningful conversations.
Next is The Bones and Friends Series and Purrfect As I Am. These mystery-adventure stories follow three brothers who use their unique strengths, including special needs, to solve mysteries. They emphasize teamwork, creativity, and self-acceptance, showcasing the incredible value of neurodiversity. The books aim to inspire children to embrace their abilities and understand the power of working together.
Spooky Ooky Dance Party and The Cat Brothers Series add even more to the mix with their whimsical storytelling and relatable themes. A key highlight of all these books is that they are illustrated by individuals with autism, making them a testament to the talent and creativity of the autism community. This collaboration adds authenticity to the stories and showcases the importance of creating opportunities for individuals with autism.
What sets these books apart is their commitment to representation and inclusion. Each story is entertaining and a tool for sparking important conversations, fostering empathy, and celebrating diversity. They’re for anyone who wants to teach children about acceptance, understanding, and the power of friendship.
I hope these books inspire readers to see the world through a more compassionate lens and encourage kids to know they are capable of anything, regardless of their differences
What’s been the most exciting part of the journey of taking this product from idea to real life?
The most exciting part of the journey, without a doubt, has been the production process. It’s such a magical experience to see an idea transform into a tangible, physical product. Every time I receive sketches from the illustrators, it feels like Christmas morning—opening an email and seeing those initial drawings is a gift that never loses its thrill. Watching those sketches evolve into vibrant, colored illustrations is equally awe-inspiring, as the characters and scenes truly come to life.
Then comes the ultimate moment: seeing everything come together in the final layout. Holding the finished book in my hands for the first time is an indescribable feeling—it’s the culmination of creativity, collaboration, and passion. Knowing that this finished product will soon reach children and families, sparking important conversations and bringing joy, makes the entire process even more rewarding. It’s a journey filled with excitement and gratitude at every step
Is there a core message, value or ethos you are trying to communicate through your branding and marketing?
The core message I strive to communicate through my branding and marketing is one of inclusion, acceptance, and limitless possibilities for children. At its heart, the message is simple: Don’t limit your children. Encourage them to try new things, ask questions, and build friendships with those who may seem different. It’s about helping children—and families—embrace the understanding that we are all unique, and that this uniqueness is what makes being human so magical.
This ethos extends beyond just humans; it’s woven into the animal characters in my stories as well. Animals in my books often face challenges similar to those that humans do—like being blind or having three legs—but they continue to thrive, engage in typical “cat” behaviors, solve mysteries, and share adventures. These characters are just as lovable, capable, and beautiful as any other, and they embody the truth that differences don’t define or limit anyone’s worth.
Through every book and every message, my aim is to inspire children to see the beauty in diversity, the strength in differences, and the endless possibilities in themselves and others. By doing so, I hope to foster a kinder, more open world where everyone feels valued and capable of greatness
What’s next on the product or brand roadmap?
The roadmap ahead is filled with exciting projects and milestones! Coming up in early December is my new book, Bones and Friends: The Case of the Vanishing Fish, the second installment in the Bones and Friends series. I’m thrilled to continue this mystery-adventure series that highlights neurodiversity and teamwork.
On December 2, I’ll also have a chapter featured in Health Through Wellness, where I discuss crucial strategies for first responders and families to support children with autism during emergencies. This project is important as it bridges storytelling with practical solutions for real-world challenges. Proceeds will also benefit a beautiful charity.
Looking ahead to 2025, there’s even more in store! Let’s Talk! Learning to Dance, the fifth book in the Let’s Talk! series will be released in the summer. Like its predecessors, it focuses on fostering inclusivity, confidence, and communication among children. It will focus on the three friends going to dance class for the first time.
Additionally, several new books illustrated by Brainstorm Productions, a company dedicated to employing individuals with autism, will debut in 2025. The first story in a brand new series, the second book in the Happy thoughts series, called Happy Thoughts: going to the beach will debut in April 2025 and the third installment in the cat brothers series in late 2025.
This December, another exciting project will launch—a second anthology to which I’ve contributed two short stories, with proceeds benefiting charity. It is called Visions and will be published by Diana Kathryn Plopa. It is supporting a cause that gives back while sharing meaningful stories is incredibly fulfilling.
The future is brimming with possibilities, and I can’t wait to share these creations with readers, continuing to spread messages of inclusion, creativity, and compassion
