Today we’re excited to be connecting with DORIS MUKANGU again. We’re excited to feature one of their products in our gift guide – learn more below and we encourage you to use your gift budget to support small businesses & creatives whenever possible.
DORIS, we loved learning your story, but I think our audience is going to appreciate learning about the product side of your story as well. So, maybe you can help bring everyone up to speed?
Our products are made in Clarkston, Georgia by refugee women. Clarkston is said to be the most diverse square mile in the US. Over 60 languages are spoken in this refugee resettlement hub. Our products are unique in that they are handmade and also representative of the many cultures of the women who make them.
Some of the materials that we use support artisans in Africa and Asia who are trying to preserve traditional weaving skills.
Our products meet the expectation of conscious buyers who want to support mission based, economically empowering, eco-friendly, made in America products.
When folks purchase our products, they support women who are making a living from their handiwork as well as the mission of our non profit – Amani Women Center.
What’s been the most exciting part of the journey of taking this product from idea to real life?
The most exciting party of this journey has been the opening of a store front (3777 Church street, Clarkston, Georgia), where shoppers can come and spend time browsing the wide array of beautifully crafted products. In addition we have seen increased interest of other retailers to carry the product in their stores. Currently we are in two places in the metro area – Garage Door Studio https://www.garagedoorstudio.com/, and Charis Books and Moore www.charisbooksandmore.com
If you had to boil your product or brand down to one core message – what would that message be?
Purposeful shopping that empowers refugee women to get on a pathway to economic empowerment. Fashion that tells a story.
What are you most thankful for?
I am thankful for the many supporters who want to see this brand flourish. and, the hundreds of women who get the opportunity to acquire sewing skills that lead to self-sufficiency. A few companies can brag about a brand that fosters relationships between the business, customers, and community. This brand is literally changing lives!
