Darren, we loved learning your story, but I think our audience is going to appreciate learning about the product side of your story as well. So, maybe you can help bring everyone up to speed?
I am a New York-based author, host, podcaster and investigator. My latest book is “DLR Book: How David Lee Roth Changed The World.” It is an exploration into the past, present and future of original Van Halen singer David Lee Roth through exclusive interviews and research functions.
Dave’s autobiography came out over 25 years ago and there had not been another DLR-centric book since. It is not just intended for Van Halen diehards, but rather all fans of classic rock and 1980s popular culture. The book was an Amazon best-seller the week of its release.
Can you walk us through the onboarding process for a new client?
No two clients are the same, so it is all about that initial communication of finding out what that client needs, what needs to be improved about, and what their expectations are for your work together. Ideally they know about you and what you are capable of, but if not, that should be part of the initial conversation.
With all of that settled, you work backwards to figure out the deadline or launch date and break everything into smaller steps. Shared resources — like calendars and drives — should be in place along with the communication tools.
Have you tried any fun, non-traditional marketing ideas? If so, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I have had a YouTube channel for years, but 2024 was the first year where I experimented with the channel in terms of content, marketing, SEO and user engagement. My number of subscribers is now close to triple of what it was about six months ago, all from that trial and error.
In the process of doing all of that, I learned that top-notch YouTube content could tank on TikTok, Instagram and/or Rumble. In turn, keep your expectations in check and realize that the algorithm does not ensure, guide or force universal appeal.
Do you have any advice for folks who are just starting out?
The “getting a record deal” or “selling a script” may seem like the end of the rainbow, but it is actually where the hard work starts. Same goes for landing a dream job. Expect the goal posts to keep shifting, unforeseen challenges to keep appearing, and for everyone to have an opinion. But if your mindset is right, most of those problems will work themselves out in some form.
