Today we’d like to introduce you to Kae Ricketts.
Hi Kae, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Kae Ricketts is a Multifaceted mother, strategist, and coach with a passion for helping creative entrepreneurs elevate in their lives and businesses without forcing them into a one-size-fits-all approach.
As a career professional and neurodivergent serial entrepreneur, Kae has been able to launch, pivot, and grow her businesses while navigating challenges and adversities. She knows a thing or two about how to maneuver through life’s obstacles while still empowering herself and others to go after what they want.
Kae gives back and creates impact by sharing what she wishes she had learned sooner, and building the resources that she would have benefited from along her journey. Her goal is to use her skills, expertise and experiences to inspire others to be their unapologetic, goal-getting, don’t-put-me-in-a- box selves while celebrating their ability to show up authentically in the spaces and places that they operate in each day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road for me. I often joke that overcoming adversity has become an unintended specialty of mine.
Growing up I was navigating the world as an undiagnosed neurodivergent black girl… There are so many layers to what that truly means. I faced challenges with things that seemed to come naturally to my peers. I knew there was something different, but had no real way to express it, so I worked around it. I learned how to make up for the things I struggled with and was able to do quite well for myself even graduating high school with one of the top GPAs in the school and securing an academic scholarship to one of the top business schools in the world.
Being thrown into a new environment with less structure and more distractions, college was a challenge for me, but I was used to facing challenges head on, so that’s what I tried to do. My executive dysfunction and learning differences ended up resulting in me being placed on academic probation. During that probationary period away from school, I got pregnant with my son, which coincidentally gave me a sense of purpose and direction that had been lacking in my life. Despite the odds being against me, I was determined to finish my degree. He was three months old when I crossed the stage at graduation and I often refer to him as my reaSON. He is honestly what keeps me going.
A few years after overcoming those challenges, my husband was diagnosed with gastric cancer. His three year illness, decline and ultimate passing taught me so much about resilience and to truly value the time and the people that we have in our lives while we have them. He was my biggest supporter and I know he would be so proud of all that I have accomplished over the years.
It took me a while to find my new normal after the passing of my husband, but doing the work to unpack the feelings and emotions created the space for me to move from survival mode into a space where I could thrive. I was able to transform my pain into passion and I truly feel that my experiences have put me on the path of my purpose.
I am still faced with challenges and obstacles frequently in my life, career and entrepreneurship journey, but I think my past experiences have really helped to put things into perspective for me. I’ve survived 100% of my toughest battles so far, so I know that life happens and I just have to roll with the punches and remain agile as I’m going through it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
When you really think about it, we are all complex and layered individuals. You are allowed to be multi-passionate, multi-purposed, and multi-talented. I am the go-to business strategist for the Multifaceted entrepreneur who wants to learn how to embrace their authenticity, find direction and build their businesses in alignment with the all of aspects of who they truly are.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for anyone just starting out would be to prioritize clarity, organization, resources, and accountability.
It is so important to get clear on what you want to do/build, what you’re willing to put into it, and what you want to get out of it. This clarity is so imperative in directing your path. I think of these questions as setting the destination and navigation settings on the GPS of your journey. You need to know where you’re headed (even if it’s more directional than precise), and you need to know how you’d like to get there.
The idea of being organized and structured is often overlooked, but the strategist in me knows there is a tremendous amount of value in starting with the end in mind and setting yourself up for success from the very start. If you know your goal is to scale your business, why not lay a foundation that allows you to do that?
Resources come in all shapes and sizes, but can truly transform your process and experience. There are so many formal programs out there that offer access to resources, guidance, assistance and support. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel, we should always be looking for ways to leverage what’s available to us.
In my opinion, accountability may actually be the biggest game changer of all. I personally struggle with competing priorities across all the areas of my life as well as general procrastination. The idea of curating a space to connect with others where you can share what you have going on and hold yourself and each other accountable is invaluable. This can look different depending on what you’re working on, but knowing that my action steps and progress are on someone else’s radar has really transformed my journey.
These items are so important to success that I’ve packaged these items up into my Multifaceted Entrepreneur Community offer. We have curated a space where likeminded entrepreneurs can come together and collaborate; sharing ideas, experiences, and strategies to navigate obstacles on our journey as we work towards our goals.
