Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Valentine
Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I spent 5 years in the tattoo industry as a shop assistant and manager before eventually starting to tattoo.
In 2022 I opened up my shop, Haven, with my wife in NYC after about a decade of tattooing.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My first 5 years in the tattoo industry were incredibly difficult. Between the constant degradation and hazing to sexual assaults, it was an incredibly hard road to navigate.
Although I wouldn’t wish the toxicity I experienced on anyone, the experiences I had are what made me want to start Haven. I wanted to create a safe, positive environment for my staff as well as clients; the total opposite of what I experienced.
In an industry dominated by men I wanted to be the change I wanted to see. And I believe we are doing just that.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Haven is a tattoo shop dedicated to fostering a safe and welcoming environment specifically for women and the LGBTQ community. We’re committed to overturning the historical toxicity often associated with traditional tattoo shops, and instead, we prioritize inclusivity and comfort for all our clients.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I consider myself a risk-taker. Speaking out against abusers in the tattoo industry and advocating for safe spaces for women and the queer community often attracts backlash and puts a target on one’s back. Despite facing pushback, I remain steadfast in our mission and will continue to vocalize what I believe is right.
