Today we’d like to introduce you to Jemma Winters
Hi Jemma , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My hair journey began at the age of 17 in the small town of Drumheller, Alberta. I initially attended hair school but didn’t enjoy it after the first ten weeks, so I decided to challenge the remaining portions. My early career saw me working in two small-town salons in Drumheller and Strathmore, putting in seven days a week to build a clientele.
After four years, I moved to Calgary and joined a salon, where I spent another four years building my clientele. I almost purchased that salon, but the deal fell through due to financing—an outcome I’m now glad about. Instead, I opened my own 600 sq ft salon with four chairs and two sinks, working 12-hour days, seven days a week for two years.
I then expanded to a 1200 sq ft salon with eight chairs and gradually built my team over four years. Currently, I operate a thriving 3000 sq ft salon with 13 chairs and three spa rooms, leading a dedicated team of 17. Looking ahead, I aim to continue expanding and growing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. I tend to learn by being immersed in the experience, walking through challenges, and growing my knowledge along the way.
One major struggle has been finding like-minded teammates, though I’m getting better at identifying the right ones. Financing as a new business owner was tough, so I used my own savings to start and am still in the process of paying myself back.
When opening my third salon, I hired a contractor and regret it—I ended up overspending significantly and realized I could have directed the project better with the knowledge I have now.
Over the past 15 years, I’ve faced personal hardships, losing three immediate family members—my dad and two brothers. Additionally, I experienced the loss of three pregnancies. Despite these challenges, I now have two wonderful children, one who is 3 years old and another who is 8 years old.
Despite these challenges, I’ve always risen to the occasion, finding strength and silver linings in every loss. Being a business owner means persevering through it all, and seeing my children thrive is my happy ending.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Jemini Hair Artistry Inc.?
I specialize in upholding and building the beauty industry standard. We are known for our amazing vibes in the salon, fostering teamwork, compassion, and expertise—qualities that I feel have been lost over the years.
One aspect that sets us apart is our package pricing. Unlike the a la carte model or charging clients for products on top of hourly rates, our guests know exactly what they’ll pay at every visit. We also offer exclusive member pricing for clients who visit us four times a year or more.
In 2013, we became the first salon to introduce gender-neutral hourly rates for haircuts. This innovation reflects our commitment to inclusivity and fairness.
Every artist at our salon can specialize in their niche, enjoy flexibility in their schedules, and receive benefits, creating a happy work environment. This positive atmosphere translates to happy guests, which is something we are incredibly proud of brand-wise.
I want readers to know that our brand is dedicated to providing exceptional services in a welcoming and professional environment, ensuring every client leaves satisfied and confident.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I find success in my team’s personal life successes. Whether it’s purchasing homes, buying cars, or starting families, Jemini Hair Artistry has been there to support and be a part of their stories. That’s what success means to me.
