Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Kleinman Phillips.
Hi Jacob, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sure, so I actually went to school down in Georgia to study industrial design at SCAD. Which gave me a great foundation for design thinking and creative problem-solving. Then I went into the industry, immersing myself into different creative paths and diverse experiences from product design to a marketing to even living in England for a year teaching design to students. What I realized was, I was starting to build up my confidence on how I would make my own mark in this world. During that time, I had met a couple people along the way that opened my eyes into how I could use my skills and abilities to make more of an impact. This led me to open my own design agency called, Touchpoint Design. Our focus specializes in building bold brands and websites for the visionary leaders, advocates, and changemakers, who want to make an impact in the world. So on any average day you’ll see me wearing different hats from business development to marketing to working directly in the trenches with my team bringing to life my client’s visions.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Great question, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but definitely has been a meaningful purposeful one. I think the rougher and more uncomfortable it is early on, it actually helps set you up for long-term success down the road.
One of the biggest challenges I’ve come across has been with limited beliefs and mindset shifts. Sometimes it’s not necessarily an external obstacle that’s in your way, but an internal one that is holding you back. For example, one limiting belief that held me back early on, was not believing that I had what it took to be a successful business owner. Whether that was true or not, that internal belief and dialogue was hardwired into my subconscious and made me question myself, the decisions I made, and stunted my confidence. So I had to learn how to rewire it so it didn’t hold me back from trusting myself and believing in myself. This took an extreme amount of self-awareness to see these patterns and then a deep focus and perseverance to rewrite them.
Another struggle was, I opened my business up in February of 2020, a month before Covid started and basically shut the entire world down. It goes without saying that that was definitely a tough challenge and a huge obstacle to figure out how to navigate. We were all living in this new world where there was so much unknown into what the world would look like the following day, the following month, the following year. So it was definitely hard to plan for and stay focused on the things within your control versus the things outside of them. It ultimately meant that I had to get smart with my services and offerings and become extremely agile and flexible to adapt to the supply and demand of the problems I was solving in my industry. So instead of a business that had all these extra complex facets to it, I kept things simple and made sure my foundation was built the right way so it could adapt quickly.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am the CEO and Brand Design Strategist of Touchpoint Design, which is a design agency specializing in helping passionate small businesses and nonprofits transform their mission into a movement. In other words, we’re basically like a ‘magnifying glass’ intensely focusing our energy directly on your problems and helping you ignite your brand into a powerful movement that makes a lasting impact.
One of the biggest pain points clients come to us for is because they have a disconnect between their vision and its communication and it’s not allowing them to stand out and differentiate with intention. It’s a noisy crowded place in the world, and without the right foundation in place, you can easily blend right in or not have the right message that resonates with the right people. We’re experts in transforming these struggles into a clear, powerful narrative that ignites action and drives change.
The thing that sets us apart from others is our process. Normally, branding and web design projects can take upwards to 6+ months to complete. Most businesses don’t have the time though to wait that long to make an impact. So we’ve rebuilt our process and perfected the way we work with our clients so that this way we can build everything clients need in under a week of working with us. We simply start with what we call a BrandIgnite, which is a 2 hour deep dive interview that allows us to create a tailored roadmap customized to solving your unique problems. Then we execute it with one of our BrandSurge packages, which have been built for smooth, swift, and impactful brand transformations. Our clients are absolutely in awe of our process and thrilled with the results. If anyone is interested to learn more about our process, you can visit www.touchpoint-design.com
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I definitely have had some amazing people in my corner that have helped shape who I am today and have supported me every step along the way. A few of the people that have played the biggest role in my success are:
My family, who has been the backbone of my journey since day one. From emotional to financial support and everything in between I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support. They are the TRUE cheerleaders, advocates, and supporters!
Owen Foster, who was a professor of mine while attending SCAD and has since turned into a mentor and friend. He has ingrained in me the principles of design and transformative thinking, which have become the foundation of my design practice and design philosophy.
My business coach, Pia Silva, who has also been a huge influence on me and helping transform my business and life from the inside out. She has truly helped me up-level the impact my business has on my clients and streamline the quickest most efficient way of making it happen.
