Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabelle Giandomenico
Hi Isabelle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I get asked about my story, why I pursued a career path in Holistic Medicine, and how I got here today, I think back to when I was young, living in chronic pain, and was dismissed time and time again. “It’s just part of being a woman,” my doctor would tell me. “A lot of women just live this way,” I would hear. “You’re perfectly healthy,” I was told by another doctor. And yet, I could barely make it to school some days because of the pain, I was very limited in what social or physical activities I could do, and I was exhausted all the time. I was dismissed for so many years, unheard by multiple doctors, and by the time I was in my mid-20s, I was diagnosed with three chronic illnesses, as well as several other health conditions. I live with endometriosis, hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and dysautonomia. My pain and symptoms were not normal and I was not perfectly healthy. Because of my positive experiences with practitioners in the holistic health space, I made it my goal to help other people, especially women. I became a Holistic Practitioner because I finally found doctors and practitioners who took my health conditions seriously as well as respected my choice of treatment. I am here today to support those clients who come to me with a similar story and say “Nobody takes my symptoms seriously and I feel like it is all in my head.” I was that patient who felt the same way. I know from being in communities with others who share the same chronic illnesses, as well as from my experience of being a practitioner, that the client or patient knows their body best. If you feel something is off, you are not alone and deserve to be heard. And trust me, it is not in your head. As a Holistic Practitioner, I have made it my goal to give people their power back so they feel they are in control of their health and have a safe place to share the full story of their health journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. Living with multiple chronic illnesses has caused plenty of obstacles along the way. They impact every aspect of life. Just getting myself to and from college was a challenge. I would have to use a heating pad and take anti-inflammatory medication before driving to school in the mornings. There were times when my body did not allow me to push through to get to class. Despite the challenges, I had to adapt and figure out my own ways to accomplish daily tasks. Life is not always easy, but I have learned the importance of accepting help when needed and developing a healthcare team to support me and keep me going. My health challenges have also made me a better practitioner. My experiences have led me to be extremely dedicated to providing the best possible care to my clients and allowing them to feel truly heard.
We’ve been impressed with Sunrise Wellness & Holistic Health, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I opened Sunrise Wellness & Holistic Health to support those tired of the traditional “cookie cutter” approach and looking for a personalized approach to care. What sets me apart from others is that I take a collaborative approach with my clients. This means that I provide my recommendations to clients, but they have full control over the decisions they make about their care. At my practice, I have clients fill out an intake form ahead of time where they answer questions that express what areas of their health they are looking to improve and define what their health and wellness goals are. I offer hair analysis testing, where clients receive lab results on food intolerances, environmental intolerances, nutrient imbalances, hormone imbalances, digestion and metabolism imbalances, and heavy metal buildup in the body from one test. We combine the results of the test with their symptoms and goals to create a personalized plan including dietary changes, lifestyle changes, and supplementation for that individual. Everyone is unique, and I believe in individualized care to improve that person’s symptoms and achieve their goals.
My specialty area is women’s health. I am known for supporting women with hormone imbalances and women’s health-specific conditions. However, I welcome anyone looking to improve their health and wellness to my practice. As I always say, “a new you is dawning,” and it is never too late to embark on your health and wellness journey. In terms of my education, I hold a Bachelor of Science in Public Health with a minor in Psychology and a Master of Science in Health and Wellness, and I am Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition (Candidate) through the National Association of Nutrition Professionals.
What’s next?
My plan for the future is to change the narrative on care for endometriosis. Typically, women are presented with a couple of options, often that are not feasible or appealing. I want women to know that there are more forms of support and that there is care available for them in addition to those few traditional treatment options. I also plan to keep spreading awareness about endometriosis, since there is so little known about the condition and there are many misconceptions about it.
