Today we’d like to introduce you to Dirty 1st Management
Hi Dirty 1st, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Our journey started by assisting cousin, German, with his media agency Power Of Reggae, and a friend, Steve Austin, with his label House Of Muzik Ent. As we gained experience, we launched Dirty 1st Management and began working with artists across several states, including Florida, New York, California, Virginia, and North Carolina. We also expanded internationally, collaborating with artists in Central America, particularly in Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize. In early 2023, we formed a partnership with Red Coral Universe, a forward-thinking streaming platform that focuses on supporting independent artists in film, television, and music. Today, we represent 17 artists with 72 videos featured on the platform. Recently, two of our artists, Sha The Artist and Ry Beezly, had the chance to open for Bobby Shmurda at a concert series presented by Tim McMurtrie on October 13, 2024, which was filmed for Red Coral Universe
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. We experienced the loss of our cousin German along the way, which was a tough blow. With just the two of us managing artists spread across different parts of the world, effective communication and persistence have been key in overcoming challenges. We’ve also faced issues with funding and lack of support, especially as the music industry continues to evolve. Despite these obstacles, our passion for what we do keeps us going.
We’ve been impressed with Dirty 1st Management, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We play a vital role in shaping our artist’s careers. Our responsibilities cover a wide range of tasks and can differ based on the artist’s needs. Generally, we help set long-term career goals and develop a strategic plan, including defining the artist’s brand, sound, and target audience.
We also oversee the marketing and promotion of some of the artist’s work, handling everything from album releases and press appearances to social media and concert tours. We manage business and legal aspects, such as negotiating contracts with record labels and promoters, ensuring the artist’s interests are protected.
Building relationships within the industry is another key area. We connect artists with producers, media, and industry professionals to create opportunities for collaborations and exposure. We also take care of the logistics for touring, such as booking venues and managing budgets.
On the financial side, we oversee some of the artist’s income streams, including royalties and performance earnings, while helping plan for long-term financial success. Even though we don’t directly create the music, we often provide input on song choices, collaborations, and the artist’s overall creative direction to maintain consistency with their image.
In challenging situations, whether it’s a PR crisis or a personal issue, we help navigate those moments to ensure minimal impact on the artist’s career. Essentially, we’re there to support and guide the artist in every aspect, both creatively and business-wise.
What sets us apart is our ability to achieve so much despite limited funding. We’ve learned how to maximize our resources, and this has had a positive impact on our artist’s personal and professional lives. Being able to do more with less has driven our creativity and persistence, allowing us to reach goals that might seem impossible for others with more financial backing.
We are most proud of our strong family-oriented approach and the open communication we maintain with our artists. Not only do we prioritize clear communication between ourselves and the artists, but we also encourage collaboration and brand alignment among the artists themselves, fostering a supportive and unified family.
At Dirty 1st Management, we’re proud to be bilingual and fluent in Spanish. This allows us to better connect with a broader range of artists and audiences, especially in the international markets we work with.
What were you like growing up?
The CEO and COO both grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY, often referred to as Little Caribbean City, which exposed them to a vibrant mix of cultures and musical influences. Growing up within the heart of that diverse community, they experienced the evolution of music from the 70s onward, which shaped their broad love for various genres. The CEO pursued formal training at the Institute of Audio Research, while the COO developed a passion for DJing at Baruch college radio station, further deepening their connection to the music world.
