Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Rose Dachis
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My mom and my grandmother took me to the theater at a very young age (2 years old), we went to art museums, and watched movie musicals, and did art projects nearly everyday. I was surrounded by art. My grandmother was an artist, crafter, and ran her own design and gift shop, my grandfather was an architect, and my mother is an incredible visual artist, who studied graphic design, interior design, and fine art. My brother is a writer and illustrator, composes music, and designs video and board games. I was raised amongst the artistically curious, and my world was lit up by it. My dad is a huge supporter of the arts, and showed me the importance of art beyond just the making of it, but what it means to enjoy it.
I have honed skills throughout the years, but the healing and growth that comes from art’s presence in my life is why I am where I am now. During my deepest moments of trials and questioning in my life, it has been there.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I can’t imagine an artistic life without challenge. In the depths of challenge lie the depths of discovery. There is no way my art, or anyone else’s really could exist without the bumps in the road. It makes us human, gives us something more to discover, and reveals our opportunities to grow. There are the regular struggles of money, which is really always a struggle for an artist -even if you make money – the struggle becomes to stay relevant so that you can keep making money- in this case, it can be easier to lose sight of the work itself. The moments of no creativity flow, the personal hardships in life that affect the work, or the ability to do the work at all, the insecurities, the outreach, and on and on. This is not an easy life. AND YET. It is a glorious one. Practice patience.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about MayimArts?
I specialize in watercolor portraits and handmade Ketubot (Jewish Marriage Contract). I am very proud of my work making a living working intimately and intentionally with couples to create a beautiful piece of work that represents the love they share and the commitments they make to one another. It is the most unique collaboration I think one can have. If you are getting married- or know someone who is, it is a special way to honor this leap into the unknown together.
How do you define success?
Being comfortable in my own skin.
