This question speaks to me right now because I am overwhelmed with gratitude for an incredible opportunity that was recently presented to me. After many years of not seeing each other, I recently bumped into an artist friend at the Seattle Art Fair. I know her from a co-drawing community that I participated in from 2016 to 2020. The co-drawings were created by a group of artists who would meet regularly. Anyone could initiate a new drawing and then pass it along to another artist who would work on top of the original drawing. This was a process of collaboration involving surprise and trust. There is a saying that goes “to be loved is to be seen”. I have been fortunate enough to have had many experiences in my life where folks have gone above and beyond for me and for that I am so unbelievably grateful. My favorite moment though has to be in my first writing class of my freshman year. The class was being taught by Andrew Meyer (producer of The Breakfast Club and many other iconic stories), so admittedly I was a little excited. I’ve been a creative person my entire life, whether I’m writing, filming, acting, modeling, singing, or collaborating with other creative people in any of those ways, and my creative energy was so apparent at a young age that a teacher of mine in my formative years truly inspired me very much. When I was in fourth grade, I found myself speeding through assignments and activities, often sitting there bored and looking for something else to preoccupy my time with until a teacher encouraged me to write unique and creative alternate endings to any stories or books we had just finished reading in her English class.
