We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Estela Mota a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Mota, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I opened Wave Medical in January 2021 with the intention of fulfilling my vision of being truly available for my patients and for patients to have an emotional and physical transformational space where they felt acknowledged and empowered to take control of their own health.
Dr. Mota, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up in a medical family. My parents used to take me with them to work after school. Since a young age I would be in the hospitals and clinics talking to nurses while my mother, an internal medicine doctor, saw patients. My dad, a dedicated pathologist, would be looking at his microscope for hours, helping other doctors confirm the diagnosis of many medical conditions. I saw their dedication and love for their profession but more important a strong purpose to serve humanity. By the time I finished high school, I naturally chose medicine as my profession and have never regretted. I followed their path and after realizing the system can attempt to affect how to deliver care and serve patients, I decided to establish a clinic where the priority will be always patient care and outcomes. That is why I have a Direct Primary Care clinic. This model is truly designed to provide the best quality of care by removing third parties and corporations out of the patient doctor relationship.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
No. However I would have gone to psychology school also so I could offer patients clinical psychology services besides medical care. Mind and body are completely integrated and management of both realms is needed to accomplish true health transformation.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Emotional intelligence and self awareness. All human beings have emotions and beliefs that mold their behaviors and the most balance and healthy we are emotionally, the more we can truly help others
