Almost every entrepreneur has had to decide whether to take the leap now or wait– perhaps they wanted to acquire more capital, experience or connections. Given how common this predicament is, we asked some successful business owners to reflect back on whether they wish they had started sooner or waited for a better time.

I think most entrepreneurs would say that they wish they had started their business soone, and because my business is brand new, I think I would have to agree completely. At the same time, I did try to start a business more than 10 years ago, and while at the time I was fresh out of my MBA program and was at the top of my class, I had no real idea how to start and grow a business from idea to scale. I definitely wish I would’ve really leaned into my business sooner. I shot my first sessions and weddings while I was still in college. I was already unsure of where my degree was going and photography was the first thing I felt confident in, but it wasn’t even my degree. Read more>>

In theory, it would be nice to have started my career earlier – especially since it would mean I would have had more time before industry-wide issues in publishing were triggered by Facebook’s push of video content, restriction of reach for professional pages and other changes – I literally couldn’t have. I would have liked to start my artistic career earlier. Although I began to study art from a very young age, and later obtained my degree as a designer in visual communication, it was not until several years later that I made the decision to exhibit all my work to the public. While studying he had participated in some painting contests, with quite good results. Read more>>

Sometimes I sit back and wonder, where would I be if I had started chasing my dreams earlier than, the age of, 23. Or sometimes I even wonder where I would be if I had the support that I needed. We all don’t get the support we needed as soon as we decide to take on the challenge of chasing our dreams. But there is one particular thing I didn’t do. And that was give up. Read more>>

I believe I started my creative career exactly at the time it was meant to be started and it has evolved in many different iterations since. As a higher education professor, I am a passionate advocate of mashing up whatever moves you and of encourages young adults to do the same. My creative career started as a performer when I was a kid, but it has morphed in so many different ways as I have grown literally and figuratively. Read more>>

I often think about this. I do wish I would have started content creation and acting a lot sooner but most importantly, I wish I would have remained consistent in the pursuit of those careers. I feel like I would have been much further along now instead of still trying to establish myself in the industry. It’s been an uphill battle, but I plan on reaching the top and when I get there, I’ll be glad I didn’t give up. Read more>>

It’s really easy for any of us to think about the “shoulda’s” and “coulda’s” when it comes to being a creative artist and starting a career in the field. I do sometimes wish that I had gone to a performing arts school because I would have been given the license to formally study and hone my crafts (dance, music) earlier in life. Read more>>

I 100% wish I would have started my career sooner than I did. I tried a couple of times, and I didn’t stick with it, thus making me start my job a little later than I would have liked to, but if I just started creating the content that I create now, maybe four or five years ago, I’m sure I would be in a different place in my life and my career than I am now. I started my rap journey in 2017. Doing it seriously at least. I could’ve been a lot farther had I started in 2015 when my high school years started. I often beat myself up for not starting a lot sooner. For example (while I don’t support the traditional education system) I’m sure we’re all aware that high school taught a couple of valuable things. Read more>>.

If I could have started my photography business sooner or later than I did, I would not pick either. Starting sooner was not an option due to my regular job. I worked ridiculously long hours, weekends, holidays, and so on. Being in the military there were also long deployments and frequent travel. Had I started photography later, it would have been during the COVID pandemic which would not have set me up for success. Read more>>

Interesting enough, although I wish I had started a year earlier. I know that officially launching my business to the public in early 2022, although I had been working with clients since late 2019, early 2020, was the right thing to do. The time allowed me to really determine what service I wanted my firm to offer and which services I wanted to release. Read more>>
