As a business owner it’s easy to feel like your work is never done – because no matter how much you do, there is always more that could theoretically be done. Many business owners we’ve spoken with also feel that they have a responsibility to be available to their team and that if they step away they are putting an undue burden on their team. So, we wanted to hear from a broad range of business owners on whether they take vacations and we’ve shared some of their responses below.

Yes, vacations are very important for the success of my business. About 3-4 times a year, I take a week and travel somewhere fun, new, and somewhere I have wanted to go. For instance, I went to San Diego about two years ago. I toured Petco Field, explored the La Jolla area and saw seals resting on the rocks in the sun, and had great tacos. While I was on this vacation, someone on my team quit, so I had to send a little bit of time organizing that. Yes! I’m a big believer in vacations. I typically take off a week during the year for my family’s beach vacation; the two weeks at the end of the year; and various three- or four-day weekends throughout the year for different things. This year I also took off a week in September. I had a staycation catching up with family and friends, and then took myself on a solo writing retreat to north Georgia – I got an Airbnb in the mountains and spent three days outlining my next novel (outside of my writing for work, I’m also a YA/MG author and I write fiction as I have the energy).
