As a business owner it’s easy to feel like your work is never done – because no matter how much you do, there is always more that could theoretically be done. Many business owners we’ve spoken with also feel that they have a responsibility to be available to their team and that if they step away they are putting an undue burden on their team. So, we wanted to hear from a broad range of business owners on whether they take vacations and we’ve shared some of their responses below.

Absolutely! Now that the kids (and my husband and I) are getting older, I have found that I have this strange NEED to vacation. Don’t get me wrong, we have always done it and always enjoyed it. But, my son is a senior this year and I feel like I have this clicking clock that is constantly telling me that I have limited time with the kids. I also feel like I have to make mini-vacations for just my husband and I a priority, soon we will be empty-nesters and we have to know we still like each other! Read more>>

Absolutely! Time off is important, even if it’s just a long weekend or a mental health day on a random Tuesday. I’ve found that I benefit from the time off in multiple ways. Time to ignore my phone, trust my team to handle “it,” whatever that “it” may be, is essential to recharging my creative batteries. When I’m NOT thinking about a problem that needs to be solved is the exact time the perfect solution presents itself. Read more>>

My husband and I own 5 businesses that are open 6 days a week. While we don’t need to physically be in each business anymore for them to run efficiently, they require brain power. We absolutely fuel up by traveling and we make sure to do it often. We luckily are at a point in our careers where we’re flexible enough to get away. Not only does it fill us back up and pour into our marriage, but it inspires us seeing how other like-minded businesses run and how we can incorporate that in ours. Read more>>

Vacations are a must. Most self entrepreneurs will feel burnt out if they do not take time off to recharge. Its sooo important to have the needed space and time to keep your business running successfully. I’ve done the working 365 days a year with no real breaks. I became overwhelmed and almost reached a breaking point to where my passion was no longer fun or fulfilling to me anymore. Thats crazy right. How can a person start to dislike their passion? It’s simple, you have burnt yourself out. So you absolutely should take as many vacations that you possibly can. No number of times set, just do it when ever and go where ever you can! Even if its just a vacation off! Read more>>

Absolutely. Sometimes I can afford them, and other times I need to just get away and then figure out how to pay for it later. It’s so important to switch up the scenery sometimes, recharge your soul and creative juices, and draw inspiration from the unfamiliar. At the end of 2019, I went on back-to-back trips to Brazil and Mexico. Both of these travel experiences were so enriching and significant that I found myself in tears on each return flight back to Detroit. Read more>>
