As a business owner it’s easy to feel like your work is never done – because no matter how much you do, there is always more that could theoretically be done. Many business owners we’ve spoken with also feel that they have a responsibility to be available to their team and that if they step away they are putting an undue burden on their team. So, we wanted to hear from a broad range of business owners on whether they take vacations and we’ve shared some of their responses below.

Being a floral designer for weddings, the majority of my work schedule is is from May-October. As I began my career in this industry I found it really had to be able to take a vacation during my “peak season”. I am lucky enough to work with my mom and my aunt, so I know that when I do take time off they have my back. However, I try to take my larger vacations during my off season-I have found that even though I work with family I still find myself getting anxious wanting to know how an installation went and that everything was handled. “As someone who has intentionally shifted away from the traditional model of ‘vacations,’ my approach to stepping away from the day-to-day of my endeavors looks quite different. The idea of working the majority of the year to afford a fixed two-week period of escape, with days dedicated to travel, recovery, and pre-return preparation, feels like a temporary pause rather than a fundamental way of living. As an entrepreneur and a mother of two, I believe finding the time to reenergize and give back to yourself is extremely important. In my early years of business, I was all about the hustle. Taking on any job or client that came my way, regardless of pay or simply just for exposure. This was so helpful in building the business I have today. I was able to choose the exact client I wanted to attract and found my love for the wedding industry as a Makeup Artist/Hairstylist. The overall goal is to have financial freedom while still doing what I love. It is safe to say that I now take vacations in the middle of a busy wedding season and is the BEST time to do so! No matter how big or small, vacations are a must! Whether it’s a day trip, short/long stay, domestic or international getaway they are all a form of self care. I encourage everyone to take at least 3 vacations per year; this may include a staycation, solo trip and family vacation. It’s extremely important to prioritize yourself especially while balancing entrepreneurship. My advice for times when it may be difficult to step away, would be scheduling vacations at least 6 months in advance. By scheduling in advance you’re able to plan and prepare. Schedule your next trip while ending your current one, this will motivate you to take time to relax. Take advantage of the deals offered while on a cruise or sent by your travel agent! Read more>>

Absolutely—I love to travel. And I believe stepping away is necessary, especially for founders. When you’re building something from scratch, every brain cell is working overtime. We’re constantly thinking about how to scale, how to keep the customers we’ve got, how to bring in more, and how to juggle all the moving parts. It never stops. Read more>>

Not as often as I would like lol. As a business owner it is highly important that we stay consistent in whatever your passion is. A lot of times that means sacrificing our personal time, and spending more time on bettering our business. When I’m not focusing on my business, I love to make time for myself whether that is going to the spa, going shopping or hanging out with my friends & family. It’s important we take time to digest & take care of ourselves. Read more>>
