As a business owner it’s easy to feel like your work is never done – because no matter how much you do, there is always more that could theoretically be done. Many business owners we’ve spoken with also feel that they have a responsibility to be available to their team and that if they step away they are putting an undue burden on their team. I plan my vacations well in advance and notify my clients early, ensuring there are no surprises. Setting boundaries is key—my clients understand that I, too, need time to recharge. To keep things running smoothly while I am gone, I have documented systems and workflows that allow a fill-in to handle basic recurring tasks. Absolutely. As a business owner, stepping away is an imperative action to not only prevent burnout in all aspects, but to stay fresh and focused on your path. There’s a time and place for everything. Sometimes it is not the time to take a vacation. However, if you are repeatedly longing for or being asked to go away and you’re constantly finding a reason to say “I can’t”.
