As a business owner it’s easy to feel like your work is never done – because no matter how much you do, there is always more that could theoretically be done. Many business owners we’ve spoken with also feel that they have a responsibility to be available to their team and that if they step away they are putting an undue burden on their team. So, we wanted to hear from a broad range of business owners on whether they take vacations and we’ve shared some of their responses below.

Taking time off to vacation can be difficult, especially in the early years of business. Many business owners feel guilty for taking time off or feel like things will fall apart if they’re not there working everyday. I think a lot of Americans feel this way as we’ve normalized over working as a society, almost like it’s a badge of honor with the thought: The busier we are, the more successful we are. A vacation- or just a break, even without any travel or celebration- pulls you out of tunnel-vision. Every person can benefit from a few days as a leaf on the wind, you really absorb something when you let yourself get to that state. If you’re so busy as an entrepreneur, it either means you’re at the beginning, or successful enough to get help. Preferably getting a vacation shouldn’t be an issue but if your business is so busy it needs someone in charge even for a few days/weeks, then it’s time to bring someone else on board at least for the time you’ll be on vacation.
