Today we’d like to introduce you to Zazu Noir
Hi Zazu, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well…I started my journey as a poet. I was just in love with words and the ways they could be manipulated to express whatever you needed them to in ways that also played on the sense of sound. It was so fascinating to me, like coming up with your own equation, with nobody able to tell you you got the wrong answer, or used the wrong method. I slowly starting writing and recording full songs throughout high school-starting to fully present and push my craft seriously about 2 years before the pandemic hit. Ironically, I began to hit the stage on a smaller scale during the pandemic, and fell in love with performing. I had a pretty crazy life growing up and wanted to use the skills I had to make a real change in the community to connect, ignite hope, and attempt to prevent many who grew up in similar conditions from missing out on information, resources, and relationships I wish I was able to make while I was coming up. I really love everything about the art, the culture. It definitely molded me into the person I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ah, is it ever really? With the personal challenges of keeping up with being able to consistently invest into your craft, the constant criticism- externally and within, and the maintenance of social appearances and interactions, I’d say the biggest thing altogether is maintaining your mental health. So many creatives get caught in the current of the bustling scene, but with so much constantly calling for your action or attention, it gets easy to forget to refocus that energy into checking your real foundation every once in a while. You’re never gonna meet a more important and critical connection in the music industry than yourself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist/performer, and to put it simply, I really do this rap sh*t. Every time I approach a song my immediate urge is to push boundaries whether it be lyrically, sonically, or conceptually- though I’ll always say my pen is my best friend. I’ve also been collaborating with other MA-based organizations to curate showcases, fundraisers, and other types of events for the past few years now, but to be honest what my pride goes to is seeing like-minded individuals in the scene begin to start receiving recognition for their talent and hard work, which has really shone through [especially] this year.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Never let the life you want slip out of view. What you believe, is what you will see. Just stick to it.
No.
Matter.
What.
