We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an actress and a film producer in Sierra Leone involves navigating a unique set of obstacles and challenges, shaped by the country’s cultural, economic, and social landscape.
Cultural Challenges
Societal Perceptions: In many parts of Sierra Leone, traditional gender roles can inhibit women’s participation in the arts. Acting and producing may be viewed as unconventional or inappropriate for women, leading to societal disapproval.
Limited Representation: Female roles in film often lack depth or are stereotypical, restricting opportunities for actresses to showcase their talent. The focus on male characters can marginalize women’s stories.
Economic Barriers
Funding Issues: There’s a scarcity of financial resources dedicated to film production. Many filmmakers struggle to secure investments, making it difficult to produce high-quality films that can compete internationally.
Market Accessibility: Accessing markets for distribution is a challenge. Currently my country can’t boast of any cinema; most of our Premiering is done in event halls, and online platforms might not be widely used, hindering the reach of films produced in the region. Worst of all, DVD sales has dropped due to piracy.
Industry Infrastructure
Lack of Support Systems: The film industry in Sierra Leone is still developing. There are few established institutions that support training for actors and producers, which can impede professional growth.
Technical Resources: Access to modern filming equipment and technology is limited, constraining the quality of productions and the skill development of those involved.
Personal Challenges
Work-Life Balance: Balancing the demanding schedules of acting and producing with personal life can be difficult, especially for women who may have additional domestic responsibilities.
Networking Limitations: Building a professional network can be challenging in a nascent industry. The lack of established connections can limit opportunities for collaboration and mentorship.
Political and Social Context
Instability and Change: Political instability and social issues, including the impacts of civil war, can affect the film industry, leading to disruptions in production and challenges in storytelling that reflect societal realities.
Despite these challenges, For the past 7yrs, all the good movies in Sierra Leone are produced by women driven by a passion for storytelling and cultural representation. Initiatives to support local cinema, international collaborations, and a growing interest in Sierra Leonean stories are gradually paving the way for change in the industry.
